In the US alone 3 BILLION dollars paid in settlement claims for sexual abuse. Far more than they have given to charitable funds

Just recently cut down 300 centuries-old trees which are part of a rain forest to hold a youth even in Brazil for the Pope's visit.

Young women are recruited, usually vulnerably in distress and are then plunged into a life of restrictions and deprivation of reality.

Catholic Church is fighting Proposed Sex Abuse Bill In California, lobbying against laws that redress abuse.

Mother Teresa's medically negligent and financially fraudulent. Had access to a fortune yet no decent conditions or care for the ones she was hyped as saving. Propaganda tool for the catholic church.
    Vatican ‘rent-boy’ prostitution ring
The Vatican moves hundreds of millions of £££ around the world on such things as private planes.
The Vatican make up fanciful tales of fiction about miracles to make a saint out of popes, in this day and age?
Nuns say they will not pay Magdalene compensation - The four religious congregations that ran the Magdalene laundries that enslaved young women and destroyed their lives have told the government they will not make any financial contribution to the multimillion-euro fund.

I am a RC, not active since primary school as I cannot be forced to take part. All of the above is just a snippet of current info, never mind the **** you can dig up if you start going back through history.

I am going forward with defection from the church officially back in Ireland in September.

situation for many in places of poverty
    - People are put in physical or emotionally distressing situations;

    - Their problems are reduced to one simple explanation, which is repeatedly emphasized.

    - They receive what seems to be unconditional love, acceptance, and attention from a charismatic leader or group.

    - They get a new identity based on the group.

    - They are subject to entrapment (isolation from friends, relatives and the mainstream culture) and their access to information is severely controlled.

Sisu, why? What lies behind this attack upon the Roman Catholic Church? Do you identify any differences between the Catholic Church and any other established denomination within Christianity? If not why just the Catholic Church? Why here and why now?

The few who actually know me will acknowledge that I am one of the last to leap to the defence of the Catholic Church, however I do classify myself as a Christian. Therefore whilst I will disagree with the doctrine of the Catholic Church, I cannot stand idle and watch all Catholics be tainted by the actions of an organisation. To my mind all church organisations are man-made structures and are tainted by their very human weakness. However, they do aspire to promote the essential truths of Christianity within the parameters of their own knowledge and understanding. As with all human endeavours they fail. So Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox, Evangelical, etc etc we all try to portray the essential truths of our faith but we all fail.

The Catholic Church is one of the most evil organisations that has ever existed. Most ordinary Catholics have nothing to do with the crimes of the institution though.

I think you offer a cop out with the "human weakness" nonsense though. There are plenty of human organisations that don't rape hundreds of thousands of children and condemn raped women to death because they need an abortion to save their life.

If we want to engage upon a discourse on Christian theology then I would probably start it by saying that to be a Christian, you must firstly be a human being and therefore are subject to all of the frailties of the human condition. Therefore "human weakness" is an essential and not a cop-out. Whilst the organisation of the Catholic Church rightly stands accused of failure in its duty of care to its parishioners it has to be remembered that it was not the organisation that raped those children but the individuals who operated within it. Again when we consider abortion. I do not agree with the Catholic Church's stance upon abortion. However, in the majority of the Western World we live in democracies where the law is no longer written by the established church but by a parliament of the people. Therefore it is up to the electorate of each State to decide for themselves how their laws should be framed.

"Not every one that call me Lord will enter my Kingdom". Do not blame the church, but those that deceive others. There are good and bad apples.

Or put another way. There is only one true church and that consists of the followers of Jesus Christ. All man made denominational organisations that call themselves churches are mere imposters!

The institutional cover up of the rape, punishment of the victims, and protection from justice of the guilty at all costs was done precisely by the organisation. Also, the promition of sexual perversion in the first place (denial of healthy sexuality) is also a consequence of the organisation. It is only due to the pope having immunity from laws from when they supported fascism in Europe (yet another shameful history) that he didn't go to jail for his crimes.

Your defence is also circular. You might believe that humans are inherently sinful and weak but that doesn't make it true. It's a convenient excuse to those who want to avoid responsibility for their own choices.

Where is Bluff? Haven't seen him around lately. Probably watching too much True Blood.

The thing about the Catholic church is the whole hierarchy of power - the Pope, cardinals, priests all its earthly artifices and machinery are made by humans and have no relation at all to Jesus or any of the gospels' teachings. The idea that Saint Peter is the first Pope wasn't something that he declared himself, again that came after, the Catholic church deciding that's just how it was.

A wee bit of a Play on words there RS: an institution is the people who run it. The bricks and mortar are inanimate objects but that's not what you're talking about.

The institution was (even if you allow for Gods hand in it) designed and managed by human beings....so the "human weakness" of *****phillia may be individual but the systematic coverup over many decades was the collective will of those in power. For so many to do so not only condoned the human weakness causing innocents to suffer it actively encouraged the behaviour by failing to stop acts at odds with the entire basis of the faith. So the church was in effect raping those children as it had the power to stop its representatives and didn't. in fact it made sure they continued their behaviour by moving them to unknowing parishioners: lambs to the slaughter if you will.

Blaming the institution is not blaming the faithful, saying the Catholic Church in effect ran or allowed a *****phile ring to be run is not accusing those within it with true faith who did not know or partake in the action or cover up.

But it does the faithful no good to not hold to account those running the organisations of their faith. In fairness dropping attendance figures suggest the faithful have indeed made judgement of the institution.

I'm not anti faith but every religion that has become an organisation becomes political and its main aim despite its moralising is self preservation and control of its main resource (followers) And almost every religion has, to further its aims, raped, stole and murdered its way around parts of the world.

I mean we don't sit saying its not the GB or the US killing people in wars as they're just "countries" it's the soldiers as individuals doing it. In fact we tend to say the exact opposite. So why would we let religious sects get away with constantly saying "it's the weak or evil individual" not the religion?

religion thrives & actively encourages a lack of education (unless controlled by them) why? I'll not suggest the obvious reasons but the fact remains religion is dying in countries with the highest levels of education particularly science and growing rapidly in the remaining countries that have little & no education or funny enough where education is suppressed.
