A point just occurred to me. In his years as a manager NA never has had a decent budget to work with before. Now that he presumably has a decent budget, will he know how to use it wisely? How will he be able to judge the value of players possibly in millions, when he has only dealt in very small hundreds and thousands before? Will he feel comfortable actually being able to spend that kind of money?
It won't just be Adkins dealing with transfers, he has a good scouting team and Les Reed will be involved, as well as The Don to some degree. Even without the others, I have 100% in Nigel Adkins
I think he is cautious, a bit too cautious for me. I can't see him making any big money buys like Pardew.....hopefully he will prove me wrong!
Well going for Cork is spending it wisely, and the scouting team with the new European Recruitment guy with make sure any additions are decent ones. Cortese also gets the final say on any deal so nothing stupid will be cleared.
What's up with the European Recruitment guy? As far as i'm aware has been no official confirmation yet?
There hasn't but the club doesn't really need to put an article up on the OS everytime they recruit somebody do they? Remember that the club/Cortese like to keep things hush hush.
NC won't be held to ransom, but we missed out on a couple of people because they put the price up for Saints. NC said all the gossip about AOC's price was forcing everything else up. It will be a balancing act between what NA and the scouts suggest and what our Swiss banker (not rhyming slang) will take out of his piggy bank. I suspect we have quite a few possible targets and Saints hope to get at least a couple of them.
Yeah, im all for hush hush if it means progress. Just interesting to see if it is actualy true what he was saying because it sounded as if 5-6 players will be coming into the building. I will believe it when he is listed under the staff section of Saints in Footbal Manager 2012, more reliable that Wiki thats for sure!
Cortese has made some serious improvements to the scouting network, so if serious money gets spet, it won't be done flippantly. Cortese is also involved in transfers, not selecting them obviously that's not hs job, but negotiating with clubs and agents to get the best deal is something he's good at. He also has the balls to cancel a deal if a club/player's demands are too high. Under Pardew, we believed Elliot Ward had all but signed and Cortese pulled it at the last minute. A lot of managers have complete control of transfers and probably don't realise how much they are eating into the club coffers. Adkins and Cortese will have a close working relationship and each is well aware of their roles when it comes to transfers. I guess we won't know until we find out, but I'd trust sound decisions to be made.
I know it's only gossip, but wasn't Guly selected by NC against Pardew's wishes. Paper talk I know, but it was said at the time that NC was angry Pardew didn't play Guly in his last game (or brought him on late). Guly hasn't turned out bad, has he?
It wont be Adkins deciding of the fee, that is Cortese's job. All we have to worry about is whether Adkins is a good judge of talent. So far he has signed some duffers.
So far Adkins has signed mostly dross. I'm not looking forward to him with serious cash. Hopefully he's not still in the Scunthorpe mindset of buying players on the cheap because that's all he can do. Look for some quality and have some ambition please, Nigel.
That's because he's only needed to sign backup players, and I'm sorry to inform you that not many good players are prepared to play 2nd fiddle in league one...and to be honest he's only signed Forte who isn't THAT bad
Exactly, now we have pretty much 2 players to every position, only the best available will do. January was about covering players who received suspensions and injuries, on which Nigel did very well. Pardew's job was bringing in a whole new team essentially, also doing well.
To be honest in my mind they were the only players seemingly available. I can't make out why Stevens was allowed to come on loan if it wasn't a done deal to sign him in the close season. Unless it was a sort of trial period I suppose there is that. He actually signed Forte didn't he?
