Comic actor and writer Mel Smith has died of a heart attack, aged 60, his agent has confirmed.

The British comedian - known for his work on Alas Smith and Jones and Not The Nine O'clock News - died at his home on Friday, Michael Foster said.

Smith formed a lasting partnership with Griff Rhys Jones with whom he set up the independent television company, Talkback Productions.

Friends and colleagues paid tribute to Smith, born in 1952, on Twitter.

In a statement on behalf of his wife, Pam, Mr Foster said: "Mel Smith, comedian and writer, died on Friday aged 60, from a heart attack at his home in north west London."

A London Ambulance spokeswoman said: "We were called just after 09:07 BST on Friday 19 July to an address in NW8 and sent two responders in cars, but sadly the patient was dead at the scene."

Comedian and broadcaster Stephen Fry wrote: "Terrible news about my old friend Mel Smith, dead today from a heart attack. Mel lived a full life, but was kind, funny and wonderful to know."

Author Kathy Lette wrote on the site: "RIP Mel Smith. Sorry to bring sad and bad news, but apparently he died from heart attack in his sleep."

Writer Irvine Welsh tweeted: "Sad to hear about the death of Mel Smith, who gave me loads of laughs."

My age group will remember Mel in Not the NIne 0 Clock News.

Lived life with no looking back.

He helped open many doors for those that followed.

RIP man you will be missed.

Mel Smith was a hugely talented part of a group of young British talent. Not the Nine O'clock News was funny then, and for me, it's not lost an ounce of its quality.

    RIP Mel.

I had the pleasure of meeting Mel Smith back in the early 1990's.

He was in Oxford filming a BT commercial, Inspector Morose I think was the character he was playing...

A genuine and very funny man, he will be missed.

Not my era, but his comedy is timeless and the Not the 9 O'clock News sketches are part of my life. Brilliant.

That's how I would like to go, with everyone remembering the laughs. That's why I support our joke of a club <wah><wah><wah>

Quite right Albert - my mistake for quoting it.

To repeat what I really wanted to say, I went to see Mel with his old partner Griff Rhys Jones at the City Hall many years ago. Funniest show I ever saw in my life. RIP Mel.

Just looking at Mel mad me laugh. Loved Not the Nine O'clock News.
Much more to the man than just making us laugh, also a very clever business man.

The Gerald the gorilla sketch was one of funniest sketches of all time.
"Gerald's mother got on very well with David Attenborough..."

    Mel Smith will be missed.

A bit late to chip in, but he gave a lot of people a lot of laughs.

He didn't even seem to have to try to make people laugh.

    RIP Mel.
