Best known for being part of Not The Nine O'Clock News, the programme that launch Rowan Atkinson's career, and followed that up with Alas Smith and Jones, Mel Smith has died of a heart attack.

I saw him live with Griff Rhys Jones a couple of times at the Fairfield Hall in Croydon, very funny man. RIP Mel <rose>

I just saw this on the BBC website. Only 60 years old, poor chap. NTNON was very much my era as far as TV satire and comedy was concerned. I loved the Hi-Fi shop sketch, the Swedish Chemist shop and the like. Really saddened to hear this.

Like a lot of us old 'uns on here, 'Not The Nine O'clock News' was the comedy that i grew up with, many times talking over the previous nights sketches in the playground with my mates in fits of laughter (The 'football hooligans goolies' and the 'Rascist policeman' sketches being pure comedy classics)

Another nail in the coffin of my childhood :(

Sad news. One of the favourites from my childhood. Loved the British comedy and satire from a very young age, and Smith & Jones was definitely one of my greatest influences.

Mel Smith has been a part of forming my sense of humour and he will always be remembered.

    R.I.P. <rose>

So sad to see one childhood hero after another pass away :(

I liked him. He did a little known sitcom called 'Colin's sandwich' that I thought was great back in the day

Was there another HiFi sketch with a clueless salesman?

I seem to recall a line where he's asked what Dolby B stands for and he says 'ah yes that's Dolby Button'.... And Dolby C.... 'oh, that's Dolby Cutton....'

Silly but very good sketch of a hopeless salesman who knows nothing about the product he's selling.

Something so good that Currys went on to emulate it with every employee over the last decade!

    I remember that one.

"What's that then", "well that's a graphic equaliser", "Ohhh, what's it do", "well, it equalises your graphics".
