I know you spent years trying to convince everyone that players went to Chelsea for the "project" but I doubt even you believe that Falcao grew up dreaming of playing for Monaco and the lure was so great that he was prepared to give up European football. Or indeed that Cavani has always harboured aspirations to play in the French league, with PSG his preferred destination. Had Roman been able to outbid and outpay all other clubs for those players, as he was at the start of his tenure, then he would have got them. As it is there are now richer owners around and even Roman has to accept that if he gets into a pissing contest for players whose prime motivation is money then he's the one who's going to get wet.

 

Or maybe hd didn't go higher as he's mindful of FFP. You're right there are richer owners but he is well capable of triggering Cavani's release clause. He's damned if he does and damned if he doesn't.

 

He could have kept bidding but he would have been outbid in the end. It's no doubt a blow to his ego but he pretty much started the trend of super rich guys playing real life fantasy football.

Does it matter. Unless Monaco and PSG manage to find millions of fans in the next year or two they won't be playing European football anytime soon. Chelsea however will be.
