Maybe but he's been rehabbing that knee since the New Zealand tour so if it is injured there's no guarantee 10 days will be enough. Having said that, the Aussie batsmen have been so poor it probably won't matter.

I'm not really sure what that means? He's a professional cricketer, it suits him to play well and score runs every time he bats.

In the last year and a bit he's played 3 brilliant match-winning innings that no other batsman in the England team could have played (Colombo, Headingley, Mumbai). He didn't do that well in New Zealand but it turns out he was injured. He hasn't done that well so far this series but apart from Ian Bell none of the batsmen have scored many runs so far and it seems the injury from New Zealand may not have healed as well as expected. Another factor is that he's been coming in earlier than you'd really want because the top order aren't seeing off the new ball.

I think it's safe to say that Jimmy would have out by now, so well done Bresnan and well done Cook for ensuring it was Bresnan over Jimmy.

First hour of play seen off, ball now forty overs old, a better looking scorecard. Should Bresnan get out, Bell will be coming in to a much nicer position than he otherwise might have been.

Well done Root and Bresnan. Would love this to become 100 for Root and 50 for Bresnan.

Wouldn't mind 100 for both if Bres puts the foot down! ;)

I mean he is prepared to put himself out when it suits , he is ( IMHO ) so arrogant that there are days when he really does not try 100% . I am sure I am in a minority , but that is what I think .

BBC Sport's Sam Sheringham at Lord's
"Here's the latest on Kevin Pietersen's fitness, and the good news is that he hasn't suffered a recurrence of the knee injury that plagued him for such a large part of this year. We're told by the ECB that he is suffering from a tight left calf and did not take part in the warm-up as a precaution."

    From the BBC .

Great session for England, 83 runs and no wickets. If Root doesn't get a ton I will cry.

Hopefully we'll basically replicate that session again after lunch - albeit we probably won't avoid losing any wickets for a second time - and go into a tea with a lead of about 400, maybe a touch more. And then after tea, the two men at the crease plus the remaining guys can have a bit of fun and power us through to a 500 lead.

If we could do, and then pull out to give us 3 or 4 overs at the Aussies tonight, then that would be perfect. But right now, I can still see us being bowled out before being able to declare.

These two are going nicely. Bresnan's batting average is almost above his bowling average

He always tries 100%. I think you're being a bit ridiculous there.

I'd like to see us put Oz in to bat before the end of the day.

In theory we could declare before tea but there's so much time left that we don't need to leave them even a sniff and with the Australian bowlers, particularly Harris, being somewhat injury-prone I suspect we'll try to bat until some time tomorrow morning. Maybe aim to have half an hour bowling at them before lunch.

By all accounts he hits more balls, nets more and trains harder than almost any other player. Why wouldn't he try 100% in a game?
