So Pepe is going out on loan for a season to Napoli, which is surely just a pre-cursor to a permanent transfer there or to another club at a later point. Leave your tributes and favourite memories of this fine keeper here. <applause>

Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina is to join Napoli on a season-long loan deal.
Napoli coach Rafael Benitez moved swiftly for his fellow Spaniard and former number one during his spell at Anfield after failing in his bid to sign Julio Cesar from QPR.
Reina, 30, was due to report back for training on Sunday before flying out to join Liverpool's pre-season tour.
Liverpool signed Belgium international goalkeeper Simon Mignolet from Sunderland in a £9m deal last month.
Youth team goalkeeper Danny Ward has flown to Australia in to provide back up to Mignolet and Brad Jones.
Reina, one of Liverpool's highest earners, was a mainstay of Benitez's side during his successful spell at Anfield and they have remained on good terms ever since.
The Reds former goalkeeping coach, Xavi Valero, has already joined Benitez at Napoli and Reina is known to rate him as a key part of his success.
The Italian side can also offer Champions League football after finishing second in Serie A under previous coach Walter Mazzarri.
Reina joined Liverpool from Villarreal in 2005 after starting his career with Barcelona.

fans have short memories but this should be a signal for very clear discontent to start winging its way to the LFC board..... if they sign another 20 year old with potential as thier big first team improvement i am not sure fans will forget this kind of evidence.

I can link Reina going nowhere articles from earlier in the summer so this just says LFC are hollow and all the talk on suarez is just that. 35mil and they'll cave..... Real have him tapped up and will come in in late august with a 30mil bid and then the fun will start.

Our fans ought to be clealry up in arms... after all this is what low ambtition and years of 7th does. you get ****e like downing staying and real players leaving.

Love Pepe and his contributions over the years. I think it is time now though for a change and good luck to him. Let's see how Minolet gets on, which I suppose is why this is currently just a loan deal.

If I wanted, I could link you with many outlandish statements - couldn't be arsed going through the archive though so don't ask. BUT just don't need the negativity on sucha hot day.

As for Pepe, thanks for your efforts whilst you were here, you'll always be welcome back.

Don't go on the summer signings thread then coz I'm raging about this one just like MITO <ok>

Good luck to Pepe, our best keeper in a long time. A great character and the perfect keeper for a team that wants to play football from the back.

Billy as soon as we had 2 Premiership keepers on the books it was clear that we weren't going to keep Pepe. But, at least with a loan if the new lad doesn't work out we can bring him back!

But we can't can we. Players don't get called back from loans as they used to. He's not coming back even if Ming plays ****e.

The point isn't about him going, that was inevitable after we signed Ming. My issue is we could have kept him for this season and used the Ming money to strengthen where we needed to. We could have kept some continuity in the squad too. As for the "savings" we've made in wages surely we're just going to have to spend most of that on a back up keeper now anyway aren't we? Or are we going in with Jones as number two again?

honeslty if you are fine with what are hollow words and potentially lies being spouted at us like propaganda fine. right now no one person in england or across europe will be thinking that lfc are serious about suarez either. For me this (without context from rodgers or reina) just took the suarez fee back to 30mil and i think we'll be lucky to clear 5mil for reina.

if we have taken 2-4mil in a loan fee fine... great... we are then in the black on summer business..... but thats not much good unless its genuine building.

Look to spurs... they heldout on modric, they hold out on other players, prove they are not to be messed with them invest the money in a very low net spend but genuinely improve year on year.

We on the other hand are buying guys not on reds fan can really say are actually an improvement, they are all guys the current manager will back so will play more but the next manager might think they are gash.... in other words the albertos and aspas' of this world are squad players who are certainly no better than shelvey or carroll in theory.... not for the english prem.

spurs by lloris, dembele, pick the bones of city for adebayor, hold the cash and get paulinho... the list goes on.

we sell at a loss.... loan our players thus halving fees. we fail to shift guys cos we over pay them... downing, aquilani, carroll the list goes on.

Ridiculous, truly ridiculous. I hold him in the same regard as Gerrard and Carragher.
At least he will get to play under Benitez, I just wish all our players were....

Based on what ffs? They've played only 45mins for us in a pre-season friendly (in which they impressed) and yet you're practically proclaiming them to be ****! Give it a rest, MITO. I like most your posts, but this is ridiculous. Give them a chance first. Countless top players start from lowly clubs and prove themselves when they move to a bigger club. Aspas and Alberto might prove the same. They, of course might not, but they deserve the chance. Or would you rather we splurged on proven talent again? Aside from Suarez, that's not turned out too well for us in recent years...

Anyway, so long Pepe. Not happy if we're not getting a loan fee for him. For a top quality player, we should at least get a few mill or Napoli have gotten a bargain!

Pepe has been an excellent servant to Liverpool for many years. I personally wish him all the best in what his future is to bring. For 3 or 4 years he was easily amongst the top 5 keepers in the world.

He's a true professional and has done Liverpool proud over the years.

Whatever Liverpool have done about the loan, business etc shouldn't reflect on Pepe. I doubt very much he'll ever play for us again, it may look like a stupid move now, but do we really know what goes on behind the scenes? - The loan may end up being a shrewd move in the end, plus we don't know what finances etc are involved.

Plus the fact Mignolet is more than capable to step up to the mark, my only concern is Jones - the guy can hardly catch a ball.

Mignolet for 9mil is good business in my opinion - In a years time, if rumours are true and Pepe returns to Barca we could have been in the **** as teams would know we needed a replacement and probably tried milking us for mega bucks. So we got our new keeper before all that could potentially happen. Pepe will now have the eyes of the world on him in the CL, so if he performs like we know he can then that's surely a plus. He's still our player so we hold the cards on what happens....

    1. its a bad move for lfc period.

    2. reina can have best wishes. not a problem with that.

    3. rodgers words sound hollow. he is damaged by this in the end. we get a serious sell job just about every week on this guy form the club but there again... the clubs crap on the website about 2 keepers fighting for a place looks hollow.

    4. we hold no cards on it. we loanded him out = we don;t want him = we are fools.

If he performs we'd have been better off with him here. If he doesn't his value drops. It's wishful thinking that his value goes up even if he has a blinder as he'll be a year older and have a year less left on his contract added to the fact we've announced to the world he's surplus to requirements. Anything we might have saved getting Mming in early we've just blown overnight.

Losing one top class player in a summer is bad enough but once Suarez has gone that'll be two we have to replace. So yet again we will head into another season as "a team in transition". A team with half the players needing "time to settle". Replacing proven players with "gambles". This should have been the summer to build not rebuild.

I don't get this, why on loan?

He's worth a lot of money and if he wants to go or Rodgers doesn't want him as No. 1 then sell him and use the money for a good back up keeper.

He's not been himself for a couple of seasons but he's still better than most keepers.

I'm happy with Mingolet but we are now desperate for cover. It all seems a bit strange to me.

I think we have a good keeper in Mingolet so no problem there for me, I just couldn't see us keeping them both happy. If Suarez goes then we need to replace quickly and I get your point that we don't have time to settle a squad full of new players, Rodgers is gambling here, I like the signings and the squad needs one or two more and it looks good with cover in all positions but not much experience.

I'm torn half pleased with the new signings so far and half worried that if they don't work out we're screwed.

Any loan fee will barely cover his reduction in market value over the year. All we save is some wages, but maybe we still even have to pay loyalty bonuses since he isn't leaving.

Up next: Suarez to have 6 month trial at Arsenal.
