Shad Khan's Press Conference Tomorrow (Friday 19 July)

It appears that Shad Khan will not after all be going to Costa Rica. Instead there will a Press Conference tomorrow in Jacksonville. [A case of Mohammed going to the Mountain…??]

It will be interesting to see if this is simply a ‘Brand Launch’ or whether there will be any real news (like a new signing or two). I suspect the former but one can dream.

In all the media gubbins about Khan last week, I noticed him commenting on the club being in Costa Rica and hoping that Jol and 'the club captain' would come over to see him in Jacksonville. I thought at the time that it would be better the other way around - give him a chance to actually see the players training/playing and be less disruptive to preparations by taking two key individuals out of the group for a time.

Has there been any word concerning how often he's planning on attending matches, or when he's going to make his first appearance for a game at the Cottage?

Martin did well, but almost called them Jacksonville Tigers once.
Brede is there with him, so was Alistair MacKintosh.
And they said they were all traveling back for the game to Costa Rica with Mr Khan.

The jist of the interview was the mutual connection between the two clubs.

You should have seen him next to my 6-year-old when we got his autograph before a game last season - that made him seen a giant. When he patted my youngest on the head, it made his day (my 6-year-old, not Brede's!). Mind you, that was when we lost 4-2 to Reading, so there wasn't all that much competition from the on-pitch action.

 

Not sure what Brian is up to at the moment. Would be a great Idea to get Brian McBride involved as being our ambassador or liaison officer for America and Jacksonville Jaguars.
He'll know about the NFL and NASL, with the Premier League and could give us a good profile, he'll be able to talk about both with knowledge.

 

Yes, might be a good link. Brian is an Illinois lad, born about 50 miles from where Shad's company grew up. Could be marketing links all along that axis.

 

My son was equally amazed at the Training Event last April - and he's a darn sight older than 6yrs old. It was really quite funny when Brede stepped up to the podium yesteday and the mike was at a 'normal' person's height -

A couple of quite interesting extracts from comments to journalists following the 'media event'.


The first is that Shad Khan expects FFC to generate income -

"When it comes to business acumen, Shad Khan’s is well documented. So it initially seemed strange when it was revealed that he was interested in buying a Premier League team. Earlier this year and in 2012, Khan said he “didn’t like the business model” in the EPL. “They don’t have a salary cap.”

But clearly he changed his mind and negotiated to buy Fulham, a team that’s stayed in the Premiership for the past 12 years. “Things change,” he told me after introducing the Fulham management and their captain. “They have a new television contract, they’ve gotten their sponsorship in place and it’s all about revenue. They can create revenue.” Khan believes Fulham can be a profitable club especially with some stadium improvements and expansion and whatever synergy they can create with the Jaguars of the NFL. “They’re a fan friendly club. They have a neutral stand (for fans) where you don’t have to be a supporter of the home club. They’re in the right part of the city. Their grounds are on the banks of the Thames. They’re a perfect fit for us.”

Although they will operate as separate business entities, Khan believes there is plenty of opportunity for cross promotion, cross sponsorship and cross money-making.

“Every time they talk about Fulham, they’ll talk about Shad Khan, the Jaguars and Jacksonville,” said Jaguars President Mark Lamping who will also serve as a Director for Fulham. “There will be chances to for the synergy of the two clubs to come together but this does nothing but raise the profile of Jacksonville.”

The second is that the FFC camp expects Shad Khan to come up with transfer money -

"Khan was at Fulham’s home grounds last week, but had not met Jol or Hangeland until he greeted them at the airport as they got off one of Khan’s private jets that flew them three hours from Costa Rica. Pointing to the plane, Khan said: “That’s how we roll.”

That Khan appears eager to spend has already been embraced by Jol and Mackintosh, who think extra money spent on players could get Fulham on a roll. Jol and Mackintosh said Fulham has ranked last in Premier League spending the last two years.
Mackintosh said discussions have already started about how to improve the team before the transfer window closes on Sept. 2.
Khan said Fulham’s operation is ahead of where the Jaguars were when he took over in January 2011. Fulham finished 12th in the 20-team league last year.

“To be middle of the pack, you need to be doing fairly well,” Khan said. “Being in the Premier League for 12 years is quite a statement so they’re well-established, they have great people and a great plan. We have to support them moving forward.”
Khan, Mackintosh, Jol and Hangeland will fly to Costa Rica Saturday morning for Fulham’s final match of an exhibition tour.

“We’re very happy to have Mr. Khan on board,” Hangeland said. “We know he can spend some money, which is exciting. But what’s important to me is that he appreciates the values of the Fulham Football Club, likes the way it’s run and wants to continue that as much as he can.”
