Queens Park Rangers defender Richard Dunne has admitted that he has not given up hope of playing with Joey Barton at Loftus Road this season.

Dunne completed a free transfer to the Championship side earlier this week, penning a one-year contract with Harry Redknapp's side.

The 33-year-old played alongside Barton during his time at Manchester City, and has insisted that the midfielder can still prove his worth on the pitch for QPR if called upon.

He told The Sun: "He's had problems but on the pitch he's a winner.

"If he is still here, which hopefully he is, then he will be a big asset for the club."

Barton has not joined QPR on a pre-season tour of Austria, which continues tonight with a friendly against Serie A side Udinese.

I doubt he means it Tramore. I get the impression he is just being diplomatic. No point in upsetting anybody the first few days at a new club and all that.

I agree, get the head down and say nothing. I read today he has been left out of the provisional Ireland squad for whatever is the next match. Sounds like his fitness is way behind what it should be.

I have booked my flights for 14th/15 Sept. Aer Lingus to Heathrow, dep 08.50 and return 14.15 hours. I think it was 116 euro. Staying in the Jurys Inn Heathrow.

Has anybody ever read an article in which a new signing says of a new teammate,"the guy is a nut job and the sooner the rotten apple finds another barrel the better, if you ask me!"?

Players don't get to just play ball anymore. With so many papers, sports TV, internet sites etc wanting anything they can publish. He was probably asked about Barton since they were team mates at Man City and he gave a decent and harmless answer enough answer.
