If you got him, do you think you'd let Rooney leave?

No, we'll need Rooney if Cesc gets injured.

It's only the Barca VP who has said that. And he is basically a figurehead who is wheeled out to please the fans.

If Bobby Charlton said Rooney wasn't for sale, I doubt that would stop anyone from thinking a deal could still go through.

Why would they say he is staying, then say he has been sold 24 hours later to team XXXXXX?
That would make them look silly like Chav FC

Funny how people seem to believe some VP over Moyes who stated for the world that Edward woodward left the pre season tour urgently for one reason, to finalise a deal to sign Cesc Fabregas.

He even gave a time scale, 48 hours.

Yet everyone, united fans included seem to believe some 'quote' from a guy at barcelona which is about as generic as they come.

Its the same as already stated. People believe what they want to believe.
No one will know for sure until it comes out.
Though the "guy" from Barcelona is only generic because you dont know the staff at barca, if you were spanish or a barca supporter, you would probably know who he was.

Barcelona did not say he is staying. There was no official communique or announcement. It's just the VP giving his own statement of his own views, probably without any briefing from the club.

After all, if "Barcelona can assure you we will not entertain any offers for Cesc", why has our first offer been entertained for so long without any public denial or rebuttal?

and why is out VCE negotiating with barcelona right now?

    Strange eh?

The only thing we know is United are 100% in for fabregas and nothing has come from barcelona to go against that.

Barca's own website tells you just how important this VP guy is:

    http://www.fcbarcelona.com/club/board-members/detail/card/executive-structure

Not part of the executive structure = has nothing to do with the actual running of the club. As far as you can tell from their website, he's a non executive board member, so his only job is to vote on whether or not to approve deals made by the executive. Him and the other 20 odd directors, most of which would just rubber stamp whatever the president actually agrees to do.

Of course this in no way guarantees a deal will happen. But this guy's quotes have about as much bearing on the negotiating process as Wenger's.

Just saw that, probably won't help our cause in getting him though, surely any manager would want to keep Fab?

Not sure how it will change things but it could do.

though a new manager might have his own ideas about who he wants to sign which would mean barcelona have to sell.
