Probably aimed at Flyer but all advice welcomed

My iPhone 4S up for renewal next week. Frankly I'm fed up with its inability to function as either a phone or a business tool. Obvious choice is iPhone 5

Have pondered moving to a Samsung - I like the look of the Samsung Galaxy Mega - it has a huge screen which would help as more and more bloody Saab driving architects send me construction drawings on PDF and iPhone screen abysmal for that

Concerns are that functionality will be worse with the Samsung plus I guess ill have to restack all my music yet again onto a non apple device - can't live without shalamar tbh

    Thoughts and advice welcome

Stick with the tried and flawed option or try something new?

I'm stuck with a Blackberry with a touch screen which cuts you off every time you put the phone to your ear. The wife went from iphone 4 to Galaxy and came straight back for an iphone 5. But you are right, they are for fun not business. There is no good business phone.

I would highly reccomend the iPhone5. I love it - works really well.

Although, your point about viewing drawings could be a disadvantage to the Samsung. Not really something I had thought about seeing as I will (hopefully!) be an architect in a few years!

Calm down Dave. The iPhone and probably the others can do everything I want from the obvious email etc to video conferencing around the world. The problem is the apps sometimes aren't as good as you would hope, idiots who haven't set themselves up to access all available wi-fi, and most irritatingly my own IT department's rules, security fears and slowness.

But in fact I only use the phone for calls and texts. Everything else I use the iPad, and, you will be pleased to learn, this is the only thing I take on trips, now set up to abandon horrible laptop thanks to IT finally finding cloud storage they think is secure enough. It is indeed a joy to wander through airports with my battered tiny leather briefcase smirking at the blokes dragging enormous trolleys full of leads and plugs.

What I really want is a MacBook Air though - are they any good? As usual with me, the fact that they look great is enough. No chance of work stumping up for this, stuck with HP.

Business is what you do to pay for the other stuff. If you are lucky you can have some fun at it too

The Samsung galaxy s4 has a lot of toys and its very good, the nexus 4 is very cheap and I think is sold at a loss, thats what I went for as i buy my phone rather than go for a contract. It also gets day 1 updates of the new operating system. Id get that if the savings are worth it for you and youre not clumsy (glass front and vlack), if not, go for an S4 or the other samsung.

Steer clear of HTC who bring out a new phone every month but drop support of phone that are just a year old.

The thing youll love is no itunes, you just drag and drop everything you want on there like its a normal folder. Plus its a one time thing, you can move to a different maker and keep all the apps you like if you move away from a samsung.

steer clear of the windows phone though.

Not up to date with the latest Mac Books ... I have a 5/6 year old 17 inch mac book pro with only 4gb RAM and have to say it's fresh as a daisy and never had any issues and I have worked it hard ... the later ones displays look mega sharp and have solid state drives ... I am however going to have to upgrade my RAM to 8gb as found it slow doing HD video.

What we have today is good tech from Apple and they work and look good ... trouble free for me but I fully take on the comments that they are expensive. We have become very saturated and bound to get a bit bored and snappy. I just remembered i have had a few problems with Bluetooth Dr Dre speakers and apple. I am old and knackered SB and would love to leave the internet and ride around France on my new toy that's coming my Pashley Guvnor.

Good to hear you spot those business types with those trolleys ... they are called GUYS ... you sir are far more interesting with your briefcase I guarantee that. We have loads of GUYS where i am working: Insurance Hell still! ... they wheel in their portable studios and link up on hot desks before squinting at what looks like a tiny dvd players ... I often get comments as I have three thunderbolt screens and am told i am lucky ... I reply that if they should get all black invalid trolleys with trailers they could then transport monitors as well.

Thanks for feedback. As suspected the usual DT / Flyer divide opened but I'm leaning towards the Samsung Galaxy Mega - it will be useful for work; but will keep my iphone 4S as backup in case it really is a load of old Karl Henry

Thank god I don't have to do any SB type airport trawling with laptops any more - you're welcome to it

    Wubba,
i got an I5 just purely for the fact that all my contacts, music, pic etc was stored in icloud, so as soon as i tranfered the number over, everything just automatically downloaded. It is used primarilly as a bussines phone and losing my contacts, appointments, meetings etc was just no feasable.
Ideally id have got the amsung S4. Much better phone, better screen, camera and faster. It looks deceptively big but if you actually put it alongside an I5 it is only a coulle of mm wider and the same height.. its also slimmer.
So itll depend of what you actually have on your phone. If all you bussines is on there then you pretty much stuck with the I5. if you can be bothered to re-enter all your contacts, pics, data, and music..even Shalamar..it may take you a whole night, but it will be a "Night to Remember"

Love watching that Jeffrey Daniels bloke !

PS..Nokia in colusion with Karl Zeiss have just developed a camerea with a 41 X optical zoom lens & a gyroscope that eliminates and shake. Not sure when its released or price yet but its available this year.
