I'm looking for a new (or second hand) laptop, not tablet. Any advice or suggestions welcomed. I don't do anything fancy, mainly, book downloads, forums, videos and google, so fairly basic will do. I reckon 4gb Ram 2Ghz processor is minimum for future proofing. Not too concerned about hard drive size but want dvd rewriter. Anyone seen anything reasonable price or suggestions on my choice of spec?
If you're after getting rid, I don't mind doing. a bit of tweaking if it's worth the effort. Care to post the model details and a bit more on the problem?
I'm not a Mac fan, especially at the price they are, but could be convinced at the moment due to the dogs dinner that is the windows 8 they're forcing on new pc's knowing it's only really for touch screens.
Yeah, they're not cheap. But I fancied a change and from now on, I'll probably only get Macs from now on.
The screen is cracked massively to the point its unusuable alone as you can't see half the screen, it works if i plug it into my tv or a monitor using the hdmi port, 8gb ram, core i5 processor but onboard graphics, i broke it the day i got my desktop, it's got a big hard drive, i shall check tommorow the actual specs but it's some sort of acer aspire
DMD I am with Lewis on this one. Two years ago I switched to a 27" iMac and a 15" Macbook, and I wouldn't swap them for any PC or windows you care to name. Where I teach, all of our students are effectively on Macs. In my honest and humble view, they are reliable and a joy to use! You are right, they are a bit pricey, though if you know a teacher or university lecturer/official or indeed anyone working in education, you can get a Mac with a great dollop of discount!
Dutch, why a laptop then? Your use suggests tablet more than laptop. There's a new range of notebooks out that sort of double up as tablets, plus you can get them now that dual boot into android or windows. For what you want one for, avoid overpriced macs at all costs.
I would go with what clapper said, Mac's are not all that! And you could always install Ubuntu (free) which is less demands then Mac/Windows. By the sound of things you just need something cheap and cheerful. But if you want PC parts i have a MB, 2 gb Ram, Windows 7 and hard drive you can have, all you need too do is stick a processor (E8600,E6700 so on) in it and you could have more then capable PC.
Go and see Paul Rymer at peckhams just off holderness road behind asda, he a big city fan and should give you a very good deal. He does new, refurbished and second hand, I've always used him and he's a good lad.
Dutch, I believe this is the only laptop suitable for your requirements. http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=LT-094-MS Most especially when it comes to future proofing.
I have a tablet, but the OS system doesn't like some of the stuff I use. I upload some sat nav stuff from training runs/rides and I've a lot of ebooks on memory sticks, neither of which the android OS can handle. I also prefer a keyboard to the touch pad things and I prefer some PC functions to those on the tablet.
Don't go for a Mac if you don't want to overpay. And I'm not so sure about Tablets either. I have one myself and I feel like it's more of a an addon than a substitution. You could buy one which is convertible, that'd be fine. You'll be perfectly fine with 4GB, a standard i3/5 (or something similiar) processor and no graphics card. What I persanelly would recommend you to take at least into consideration is an SSD-card. They are still fairly expensive (but going down in price rapidly) but offer a lot. I wouldn't want to miss it, everything is sooo much faster. Believe me, the sheer use of Word is so much faster. If you can find a decent Laptop with an SSD-Card, go for it. You probably won't need to much space as long as you don't download a lot of movies (and even then, you could put them on an external hard-disc. Brands: I really like Lenovo laptops. Tend to have a good quality. Ah and by the way, if you're able to buy it with a Windoes 7 licences, go for it. What's your price range so I can have a look at some examples?
The price is flexible. I don't mind paying more if it's better value, but the sort of stuff I'm doing on it seems better suited to the £250 - £300 end of the market?
Have a look here, guaranteed bargains, you'd have to buy two but put one on Ebay & you will make almost enough to make yours free (you need to add VAT to the price) or find someone else who also wants a new laptop Much higher spec than you were looking for !! www.boffer.co.uk Only onsale until 11.59am or until sold out
