Nipper is the name of the HMV dog. I've never heard anyone call anyone "mush", other than CBK on here.
No, we call each other "old bean" around these parts. I have family there, so yeah I'm familiar with it. Oh and of course I do go to games now and then. I guess I just don't listen to people.
I thought mush is considered a bit aggressive...as in 'Oy, Mush.' Looked it up...derogatory word from moosh...a gypsy word for man.
Never considered mush as aggressive or derogatory, in fact quite the opposite. Commonly used at school when I attended many moons ago and still heard today, use the term to anyone from outside of Southampton and there's usually a look of bemusement. Gypsy word for man???? Maybe we're related to our cousin's down the road more than we'd like to be!!
I'm not convinced by the gypsy word as the reason why Sotonians use it. There's the alternative explanation that it was used to identify the French. People called Monsieur in the street and if the stranger reacted, then they were suspected as French. Southampton was a target for raids by the French going way back. Hence Mush became the general word for stranger, as in unknown foreigner. After all, Southampton is the Gateway to the World, or so they would tell us.
Did you not read "tiger" as a kid? Or maybe it was "Roy of the rovers" but Nipper Lawrence was a hell of. Player for his age!!!
Yes and I used to read The Lion and the Eagle as well as The Dandy and The Beano. The Bash Street Kids were always my favourite. Lord Snooty reminds me of Cameron and his mates.
I'd go further and say that 'mush' is Southampton. When my mate used to work on the cruise liners in the 70's one of the first things he was asked was, "Are you a mush"? And they meant are you from Southampton as opposed, specifically, from Portsmouth.
