In a series i hope to continue, that will look into how the season is going from the point of view of the fans. Whats working and whats not, and get some constructive discussion going on the forum,. 1.Bahrain As already discussed on this forum, the idea to call off the Bahrain Grand prix has been the right one, as it has showed it was not in the right state to deal with a race, but now three months later, and the case arises once again, does Bahrain deserve to be given a slot back, which in turn could push back the Indian GP to the 11th of December, which Ross Brawn says is unacceptable. 2.Pirelli The most used Italian word in Italian F1 racing this season, is there any other ?. The introduction of Pirelli has been a breath of fresh air to F1 this season compared to the dull strategy of Bridgestone that followed in the years before. In the season so far, we have had exciting racing, a lot of pit stops at times, but you cant even leave the telly for a quick cuppa, not a bad thing may i add. The racing has been good and we were sadly left out of a very exciting battle last weekend in Monaco, where i think we saw the main objective of Pirelli, to get different drivers on different strategies, drivers being chased down by drivers on better tyres. 3.DRS + KERS The DRS, or in full Drag Reduction System, is F1âs newest gizmo, and was brought in to increase overtaking. We have seen it work well like in Sepang, but equally as bad in places like Turkey, where the zone was too long and overtaking was easy. Some say DRS is bad, but others like Nico Rosberg went as far as to say, its the best invention ever in F1. KERS, or Kinetic Energy Recovery System is back in F1 in 2011, used by all cars this year as opposed to other years, the system is working well. The driver has the choice when to use this extra 80hp boost for six seconds, and has provided some great strategic battles on track. 4.Team Performances This year has seen the return of Red Bull dominance, in a fashion rarely seen before, Sebastian Vettel has got 5 out of 6 race wins, and on his way to his second world championship. Mclaren, have recovered well after a disastrous pre season testing, the ferrari has had major problems, but has race pace which is starting to come through. So now i put the question to you f1 nut heads, How has the season been so far ?, How are the tyres working , the DRS and KERS ? anything else i have left out, leave a point in the comments, thanks for reading, hope you enjoyed !.
I think it might be nice to see a race without DRS, just to see if it's the Pirelli's making the difference in overtaking.
I agree. I also think this is an interesting proposal, although it will not happen: It could be said that most of the overtaking is due to tyre differentials, but if DRS was honed to a more perfect thing, it is more likely to provide the more exciting overtaking right at the end of 'the zone' (the braking zone).
Its a good read sporty, thanks for taking the time to write it. For me this has been a very good season so far, despite Vettels dominance. I'm liking the tyres, DRS and KERS as they are, some say this is artificial racing, but what ever it is its keeping us all (mostly) entertained. Its a shame that the moaning culture of some teams against RB is continuing. They are not breaking the rules so the other teams should pipe down a bit. Thats my only addition to the original post
Sorry for bumping my own thread guys, but i dont know did people miss it, or dont want to comment on it(fair enough), but there wasnt much discussion , thanks
Thanks for the bump Sportydan. A mod should click the "Promote to Article" button on Sportydan's original post. I think the season so far has been great and that's mainly down the great work done by Pirelli. Just a few laps difference can make all the difference and I love how that's influenced strategy. Teams now need to be flexible and the feedback of the driver is more important. I believe the tyres are the main reason for the big increase in overtaking. I'm still not happy with the DRS, and in some races it's made overtaking too easy. We'll see how things progress in the season, but I think if the tyres are similar next year, DRS will not be necessary.
It will be interesting to see how much of a surprise the tyres can throw up next year, when teams have data for each track.. I also look forward to seeing the wet tyres.
Agreed. As for the wet tyres, and even the inters - that's going to be fun to watch, especially as drivers have had such little practice, so will probably be fighting hard to control the car. As the wet tyres only lasted about 5 laps in Turkey Practice, so I don't know how teams will fare should we have a fully wet race (like Korea last year). The 2011 races don't need rain to be interesting, but I hope we get the opportunity to see the drivers racing on the Pirelli wet tyre, and how teams handle the situation - hopefully we can get a wet race at a track like Silverstone, so Red Bull can't just dominate.
Right, by popular demand I have promoted this to an article. I believe that either Mick or Syd will have to say yes to this before it is fully published. Congrats
So now i put the question to you f1 nut heads, How has the season been so far ? well I thought the last 5 years have been classics. But this is so far the best yet. and thats even as we have a dominant racer (vettel) but we are not board schumi style. How are the tyres working , the DRS and KERS ? The tires are great but I want to see a race where they will be pushed to the limit. We should of had that at monaco. DRS is great but the zones need to be fine tuned somewhere in the middle of Turkey-Spain. KERS I havnt really heard much about this season compared to 2009. It seems to be a behind the scenes defence tool. I think they should give it some more power to get a clearer effect. anything else i have left out, leave a point in the comments, Thats a pretty good review and I cant argue with it. Im looking forward to part 2. I wonder if things will change after silverstone? El_Bando
