No bias or anything like that just your personal assessment of what sort of club we are. I have read so many derogatory descriptions of Southampton FC from other fans particularly Celtic fans and at the same time quite a few complimentary comments as well especially form Liverpool fans. So in a paragraph how would you describe our club to a football supporter who knew nothing about us?
Southampton football club is a changing organisation; one that is on the upward side of its current cycle. From the outside, opposing fans and media have had plenty of reason to show derision towards this football club for a number of years, when once upon a time it was almost seen as everyone's favourite other team. That derision is still there, however a few of those snide grins are beginning to turn open mouthed as progression seems to continue. Surely the grandeur plans of the current leader are "pie in the sky" and those deriders will soon be saying 'I told you so'. Watch out carefully though as if, and it's a big if, this monster continues to develop and evolve with its current ambitions, then there could just be a shake up in the top order of things in English football. In five years time will we be looking at the completion of the rise of a new challenger or will we be looking back at the destruction of an over ambitious club?
I did include it in the draft for the original post but deleted it as I thought it would just stimulate responses of "agreed". It was something like this: Southampton FC is a medium size moderately successful provincial football club which is well run and managed and has slowly started to put in place the essential components to become a stable and successful PL football club. It has a successful and highly regarded Academy which continues to produce top class players which have accrued income for the club in the past but now with a more stable financial model the club has no need to sell. The club also has the resources to buy top class players to add to its excellent first team squad but the purchasing policy is for talented young players to be bought who will increase in value as they mature and at the same time can be moulded into the committed team players that have epitomised SFC over the years. Lazy journalists and the fans of other football clubs have not noticed the quiet revolution that is happening on the South Coast where Hampshire's top football club is steadily transforming itself into a great football club.
Recently successful and rich. A fair few other managers will dislike us, however, as Cortese doesn't operate "the normal way" and makes sure the deal is done on his terms, not theirs.
I would describe Southampton FC as MY FOOTBALL CLUB. It's no one elses. Of course, plenty of others will believe it is theirs, but they are mistaken. [only kidding] Ultimately, I don't give a monkey's what any other uninformed or ignorant pundit or fan thinks. Occasionally I will be irked by uninformed comment, but that's purely because I loathe opinion based on ignorance and bigotry.
Fair comment. Maybe I should have added a third option of a steady premier league team, set for 27 fairly average years with the odd but if excitement..... Just doesn't sound as dramatic though.
