Dunne close to Queens Park Rangers deal
    ESPN staff
    July 12, 2013

Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne is closing in on a move to Queens Park Rangers, a source close to the deal has told ESPN.

Dunne is a free agent after being released by Aston Villa last month and QPR are on the brink of seeing off strong competition for the signature of the veteran defender by bringing him to London.

Newly promoted Premier League side Hull, Championship outfit Derby and Scottish Premier League side Celtic have been linked with Dunne in recent weeks, but it looks as if Loftus Road will be the venue for the re-launch of his faltering career.

The 33-year-old did not kick a ball for Villa in the Premier League last season as he failed to overcome a host of injury problems, which were exasperated by his faltering appearances in Ireland's Euro 2012 campaign last summer.

Now Dunne is hoping a move to QPR will kick-start both his club and international career, with his comeback for Ireland in last month's international against Georgia fuelling hope that he can play a role in his country's crucial World Cup qualifiers against Sweden and Austria in September.

Redknapp is believed to view Dunne as the ideal replacement for the departed Chris Samba, with the Dubliner's chequered injury record the primary concern if he agrees to drop down into a physically demanding Championship division.

If the majority of his wages are on a PAYP basis I dont think it is a bad signing.

This could be our most important signing this summer.

Old and injury prone and rubbish, just what we need. Should see some cracking OGs next season though.

Your footballing brain bewilders me sometimes

Dunne would/will be a superb signing but only if we can get rid of Anton.
He has had a terrible last year with injury but before that was hardly ever injured and has consistently been one of the best defenders in the Prem over the last ten years. FFS, check any records you want. He is immense at the back and bleeds effort and determination. He would be an excellent partner and would help develop Onouha into the top CB we all hope he will be.
Dunne's performances for his country have been unbelievable and he has a few years left in him yet.
I wouldn't pay a big fee for him, I wouldn't pay him any more than 25-30 grand a week, i wouldn't take him unless Anton goes but if these control measures were met, I'd be delighted to see him sign. We haven't had a quality CB like him in a long long time.

451 apps in 17 years is 26 games a season suggests that the injury problems arent just a one off.

Even the article states he didnt do well for Ireland and then had massive injury problems plus he holds the record for most PL OGs. The only thing right is his attitude, everything else is wrong.

    This
He would be immense. A fans favourite. Captain material. We need to strengthen the spine but with quality. Dunne and Parker on suitable contracts would be just brilliant.
We need to keep offloading though.

Neslon was of a similar popularity prior to signing - turned out decent signing

as those mentioned prior, pay as you play would lesson the risk

It might only be 26 games per season, on average, but you're including the first couple of seasons as a teenager at Everton when he got the odd game here and there.

If you look at from when he broke into the team properly in 1999, there have only been 5 seasons when he has played less than 30 league games (2000/1 - 28, 2002/3 - 25, 2003/4 - 29, 2011/12 - 28 and last year where he didn't play at all. That's a much better record than any of the current defenders we have at the club.

That being said, as mentioned, I think it'd only be a good deal if he came on a sensible contract.

I would be happy with this signing. Adds experience to the side and a much better player than Ferdinand.

But imo we need 2 CB's this summer. So another one please!

I agree with the guys on here who believe he is going to be a good signing. In the championship we're going to face sides who will try and pump it long. Who would you like to have at CB when this happens? Richard Dunne certainly fits the bill. He's got bags of International experience and as mentioned by QPRNUTS, he's going to pass on this experience to the younger players.

He won't put up with any s**t on the pitch from players like Traore and Redknapp will use him a leader in this squad throughout a tough season.
