Most perceptions of Hull are based on other peoples misconceptions of the place.

We have more history here than most places in the UK but you wouldn't believe it walking around some areas. The city council can take most of the blame for wasting so much money on ****e that nobody is bothered about.

I travel the world on a daily basis, been to places far worse than here albeit third world. In saying that its all relative, in Mumbai they would call Hull a paradise because at least most if not all would have a roof over their head.

If the current promise of investment from Siemens and other associated renewable companies comes to fruition, this city will change beyond all recognition within a short time. Which in turn will only benefit the people, i just hope the Allams get the go ahead to buy the KC and build the sports village. Then maybe the council will regenerate the whole area with some of the money, obviously giving a better impression for opposing fans coming to the KC. Which i hope gets renamed as well so we can change the colours away from those of TWS.

Like i said Febbos travelled the world for 28 years with work but i always come back to the area. I live in Hedon by the way !! Slowly becoming the new Preston Road of East Hull.

Saying that looks like i'm off to Perth for 3 years soon so maybe my opinion wont count so much !!

John, what you have written could not have been better put!!!! I moved to K.u.H nearly 10 years ago for all the reasons you give in the main body of your post and love the place as much, if not more than, the first day I walked in the city!!
I hate when people in, or around, the city slag off what they have! It is a jewel that most do not see, and do not appreciate, sadly.

    Well put,saggy. And John too.

I've lived in Sutton, East Hull, the Avenues, Bev Road, Spring Bank. Went to school and Uni in Hull. Ran retail businesses in Hull. Went bankrupt in 1995 - lost shop and house and then moved down to Norfolk as I'd "had it" with Hull then.

Didn't visit for five years and then came a first, tentative visit - and it's got better each time I've visited.

The big thing for me (where it starts) is coming over the Bridge and seeing Hull stretched out along the north bank of 'Big Muddy'....superb!

Beverley - wow the thriving metropolis - doesn't even have a cinema. My elder brother lives there and even he says its boring.

Personally, I live in Sutton - and a dump it certainly is not. Kingswood not too shabby too.

Having visited football grounds the length and breadth of the country I am more than happy to say I come from Hull.

Compare even the rundown area of Anlaby Road nearest the KC with areas around St Andrews and West Brom in Birmingham not to mention Bramall Lane and Hillsborough and I think we compare favourably.

Much work still to do on the regeneration of the city, currently stalled by the recession but the Old Town, The Marina, Ferensway (St Stephens & Interchange, Hull Truck Theatre) have shown the city is far from depressed.

As for the locals - as someone who spent over a decade away from the city in my 20s, yes they are a pretty insular bunch but I believe in the main they are proud to come from Hull.

Mrs BMB ignore the lads they are just mucking around, of course you can give an opinion and as you have illustrated in the past I'm sure it will be a wise and valid one as well.
You got to see Darlo win at wembley huh? I bet you enjoyed that :)
Give my regards to Mr BMB and I hope he is in good health

Whilst been at Uni i do have to put up with some **** from people about Hull, mostly from southerners! It's not got anything on places like York but it's hardly a dump, and aside from a few clowns that every cith has i find the people quite friendly and down to earth if i'm honest. Thje media hardly paints a glowing image of the place, and reaching a wide demographic people will take this on board. Shows such as 'The Lock up' on BBC1/3, that program Sarah Ferguson did on Preston Road etc hardly do the city any favours when in the media spotlight. But i think it speaks volumes that the people who come to live here for work, university etc seem to mostly enjoy the place and feel the city doesn't deserve it's negative representation. The Old Town, museums, art gallery and the Deep offer plenty to do and the nightlife has plenty to offer. Hull has it bad parts, but what city doesn't?

To be fair i don't think Hull gets as bad a press as places such as Liverpool, Birmingham and Nottingham. The first 2 suffer due to their stigmatised accents and all have perceived high crime rates. I have never spent a lot of time in Birmingham or Nottingham so i can't really pass comment, but having been to Liverpool several times and having scouse friends at uni the people are pleasent and friendly with a good sense of humour. I enjoyed talking to Liverpool and Everton fans when we were in the premiership and feel that the stereotypes of the place affect people's perception of the city and people. Seems you have to go these places yourself before you can pass judgement without the use of stereotypes.

So, you can go motor/go-karting in Beverley? cinema? (especially digi-cinema, considering Hull has the only all-digital cinema in Europe), ice skating? take in theatre performances? watch national touring bands' gigs?, bowling?, catch a ferry to the continent?, watch major sporting events?, go to a nightclub?, go to the casino?, 24-hour gym, I know it's better to support independents, but you can't shop at any of Topman, River Island, Next, USC, BANK, Republic, Scotts, Van Mildert, H&M, Sports Direct, New Look (for men), Peacocks, TK Maxx, Size?, CULT, for clothing in Beverley. For household goods/appliances/good in general you can't nip into Beverley to go to Argos, B&Q, GAME, Gamestation, HMV etc... Food, again - independents the better, but you can't nip into Beverley for a Frankie & Benny's, Pizza Hut, Prezzo, Nando's, Burger King, KFC, McDonald's, Chiquito's, Starbucks etc... If you have kids, you can't just nip to The Entertainer, ModelZone, Build-a-Bear, Mothercare, Pumpkin Patch, Mamma's & Pappa's etc...

As for tourism - there is loads to do in Hull - EIGHT free museums, including Wilberforce House, the Streetlife museum and Ferens Art Gallery (which is praised by people from all over for it's collections), Holy Trinity Church, St.Charles Borromeo, The Ale Trail, The Fish Trail, Larkin Trail, Walk with Wilberforce - a walk down High St alone is worth it... and then not forgetting The Deep. There's loads more could be made of Hull's history too - Blaydes House and Charterhouse are wasted, as is Beverley Gate, which should tell an important story about Hull's history.

That's just scraping the edge of things to do, so your comment that there is nothing to do in Hull is a bit blind.

and as I'll mention below, Leeds has had loads of EDRF money pumped into it, Hull hasn't.

Leeds has had loads of public and private sector money invested in it though... It has a lot of the right amenities, but style-wise, it's based on personal opinion. Personally I think all the empty, souless, sore-thumb towers look a bit naff, as they're just copies of many other's elsewhere. Hull is in a great position because it can learn from other cities mistakes... Hull should look to it's twin city of Rotterdam more and embrace unique, one-off pieces of architecture. Surface Architects, some of the best architects in the country, are based in Hull! They have some great idea's, but sadly there isn't anybody willing to part with their cash to make them happen. Hull has to depend on public money far too much and even in that sense it doesn't get half as much as what other places do that don't need it as much, Leeds being on of these places... it already has plenty of private sector money coming in. Hull needs more EDRF funding to attract private investors.

As for your comment RE: Why does Hull have no tall buildings? It's due to previous planning master plan's. It was seen as if there is just one tower, it'd stick out like a sore thumb and look silly. So the plan was to keep everything the same size. That rule has been relaxed now, but Hull is waiting for a developer to come in and create something tall - Manor Properties were meant to do that, but don't hold your breath for it!

Hull is slowly but surely getting some very interesting buildings though - look how unique the BSF school's are. And this Myplace development set to be built on Ferensway....

Great post pal and i completely understand where you're coming from. I'm sure Hull will become a great looking city in the future, i just wonder how long that will be. I also understand the tall building thing, thanks for clearing that up. If someone would just invest some money into the city it could look great.

i also agree that there is so much to do in the city and you can always find something new to do. There is also a considerate amount more than in beverly

I miss the fair King's Town, having lived in Southall, W London for the last 3 years. Even now Hull where most of my mates are. Choice, London or Hull? No competition, give me the banks of the Humber anyday!

PS You would all hate Southall, believe me...
