I went a couple of years ago to stand by the road and watch. Waited two hours, then they were by in a flash. If you want to be there you need to be on a mountain stage when they are going more slowly.

Morning all from an overcast Bandit Country. Half a day of work and then an afternoon visiting various solicitors and then Costco to get the supplies in for the BBQ bash tomorrow afternoon... BB - Yes and no. I agree that rivalries are much wider than just England v Australia or Scotland v England and clearly Australia v The All Blacks is massive and there are hundreds of small and more instant rivalries - would the bottle of piss been thrown at a French rider? But there are some special rivalries that make them more intense. It's a bit like local football Derbies - loads of examples of "big" Derbies, but each club will have just one real local rival, even if they may not have played them for years For me The Ashes is another example and England v Scotland at football is another...bring on 14th August and I have got some tickets!

The Jersey v Guernsey rivalry can be a bit strange. Unless they trophy has a special name - Muratti Vase in football, Siam Cup in rugby - the fixtures are inter-insular. Doesn't that say something about how the islands see themselves if that term is still used? The Jersey rugby team has been very successful over the last few years, with the result that another promotion will mean that they are in the Premiership but it meant that in 2012, Guernsey threatened not to take part in the Siam Cup as they thought Jersey had an unfair advantage. The most bizarre event was in football, as a term for those from Guernsey is donkeys, as it is the national animal. You've seen bottles, coins and seats thrown on to the pitch at matches, but a couple of years ago, when the Muratti was in Jersey, fans behind the goal were throwing carrots into the penalty area near the Guernsey keeper!

Evening most (given the location) Haven't been in the nest for a while so hope you are all well. I finally got my renewed visa through today, only 11 times to immigration and 2 months for the process. But relieved to get it out for another year.... Enjoy the weekend all ! Dreadful graphic descriptions here tonight after the Intercity Paris-Limoges train left the rails at Brétigny-sur-Orge. Really would rather forget some of the things that have happened to people, but it is not that simple. Many were on their way for a weekend in the country and could hardly have imagined what would happen as they left the capital. French news is describing it as something like a war scene.
It made our national news too...sounds terrible. No indication here of what might have gone wrong but I suppose the speed trains are capable of nowadays means any kind of collision or derailment is likely to result in serious injuries.
