By John Bennett: African football reporter for BBC World Service

Wilfried Bony first came to my attention when I was in Gabon for the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations.

Back then the man who was regularly called the ‘new Didier Drogba’ was very much seen as the former Chelsea star’s understudy and only started one game.

But, 18 months on, it’s Drogba who is struggling to make the Ivory Coast first XI and it’s Bony who has scored in all three of the nation’s last three World Cup qualifiers.

Bony really started coming out of Drogba’s shadow straight after the 2013 Cup of Nations in South Africa.

After returning to the Netherlands he scored in every single one of Vitesse Arnhem’s next 10 games and at one stage only Lionel Messi had scored more goals in a major European league.

I spoke to Wilfried during that scoring run and it says a lot about his personality that he put his form down to work-rate, luck and the ability of his team-mates.

Bony is likeable, open, speaks excellent English and seems popular wherever he goes.

I visited his former club Sparta Prague last year for the BBC World Service and they only had positive things to say about the striker, remembering him as a hard worker who fitted in well.

Big, strong and unafraid of a physical contest, for me he’s at his best when he’s leading the line.

Last season the Vitesse coach tried playing him in a deeper ‘No.10 role’, behind the main striker, but a return to the centre-forward position sparked his memorable run of goals. A link-up with Michu could be very exciting.

He’s been dreaming of playing in this country for a long time – after being rejected by Liverpool in 2007 – so he’ll be determined to do well if he makes the move.

‘The new Drogba’ may be going a little far, but Bony is good friends with Didier.

In fact, Bony told me that he speaks to him most days, so don’t be surprised if he’s had some good advice about how to handle some of the Premier League’s best defenders. In my opinion, Michael Laudrup could pull off another masterstroke signing Bony.

    Lets hope so

It's some funny **** to see fans of other clubs being frustrated and jealous of this signing even the Arse fans.

It is a big signing though..money wise.

    Good times;)

Just been reading the comments on the BBC. Some unbelievable comments, like where is the money coming from, Swansea = Portsmouth etc. But then you see Spurs, Liverpool & Arsenal fans asking why they never went in for him.

Going to be an interesting and exciting season ahead.

I think the reason why we haven't had a stadium expansion is because the money was invested on players! There is one thing the club would never do is weaken the club and put it in a vulnerable position!

Wouldnt it be nice to see him and Michu (our Bonny & Clyde) getting one each in the opening game, I am sure Michu is going to love playing off him

Liverpool are upset, not due to missing out on Bony but because they signed Kolo Toure on a free but they wanted to offer £10M

  20. He isn't the first to slip through the net and he sure as hell won't be the last (Shelvey may turn out to be another, he just needs games).

Bony is a very good signings for you guys but I think he will bring a bit more structure to the team. I don't believe he is a flexible forward like Michu (I appreciate they will both play, I'm talking purely about the CF role).
