Joey Barton moved closer to a Loftus Road exit after his agent issued a 'come and get him' plea to French giants Marseille.

Barton spent last season on loan in Ligue 1 with Marseille where his combative performances endeared him to the clubs die-hard fans.

Following the termination of that deal, Barton returned to QPR for pre-season training last week, albeit two days late.

No official approach has been made from Marseille to bring Barton back on a permanent deal and the player's £70,000-a-week wages are believed to be a stumbling block.

Barton has two years left on his contract at Loftus Road and is understood to be unwilling to move on to a new club where he would likely receive reduced terms.

Hoops boss Harry Redknapp has previously intimated Barton may seek a golden handshake from QPR in order to leave the club.

Speaking to reporters in France, Barton's agent Willie McKay said: “We're still in negotiations with QPR on Barton's future.

“I'm surprised by Marseille, I thought they would have made more of an efffort for him- he had a great season.

“After (Mathieu) Valubena he's the most popular player at the club.

    “He deserves more from Marseille.”

What a blow to his ego. I can't believe that they are not moving mountains to secure the services of such a great player:emoticon-0116-evilg

We should really wack his ego and make him clean the other player's boots, just so that he earns his £70K per week.

Then when he refuses, sack him, let him try and take us to a tribunal.

We knew what we were getting when we signed him. If he plays and gets us promoted he will earn his £70k per week.
