When I started supporting City in 1963-64 I knew I was new to it but nobody made out they were better than me because they'd been supporting City for years. When City spent a lot of money and the attendances trebled nobody talked about plastic fans. Maybe it's an internet thing.

Yep, read it twice. Maybe i missed it. The bit that confuses me is "The DNA of the club is in the long term supporters who have seen very dark days indeed as well as 2008 onwards. These people have passed their test and are proven. The new ones haven't".
Still sounds disrepectful towards new fans who are unfortunate (according to you) enough to be too young to remember: getting locked out of our ground, bottom of the league by a good few points, crowds of 3 or 4 thousand etc.

You hadn't met CC and Asbo at that time, Peter? <whistle>

Depends what you mean by new fans.

    Someone starting in 1998 isn't.

    Someone starting in 2008 is.

Don't care when people started supporting City. Everyone has to start some time. And it is only to be expected teams get more support when doing well.
My issue is with people from Hull supporting clubs from other cities. Especially ones who go on a out their pride in supporting one of the rugby clubs.

My lad started going in 2008. He was 7. Is he a **** fan too? His first game was the Watford playoff game at home, his second was at wembley and he got a seat next to mine for the premiershp. What a glory supporter.

1963 was when I started going regularly. I am a bit older than Pete so that was when I could go on my own (I am from East Riding so had to travel. It was a mate originally from Hull who got me interested.)
I actually did know Pete years later. He was one of the very first I can recall on Bunkers with a skinhead cut, though he may not like me mentioning that.;)

To clarify then, is someone who starts going to City this season as much of a fan as that bloke (can't remember his name) who had been to his millionth consecutive City game recently?

My dad took me to my first City game when I was barely ten, back in 2001. We played either York or Cheltenham at Boothferry Park. I've had a season-ticket every year since the 2002/2003 season. How much of a City fan am I?

Blimey. You started going in '98, then had the arrogance to procreate just a few years later?

How old were you when you started going to City then?

Hey, Asbo - were you a new fan once? Or have you always been a fan?

Trying to measure how good a fan you are is pretty sad.

Personally, I think it's all about spirit.

Logically, as a general rule of thumb and to use a cliche, the more you put in, the more you will get out?

No. But in time he could be if he continues going through the bad times as well as the good.

I'd agree. I personally don't care how people perceive my fanship (though some people are clearly touchy/screamy about it) and have no interest in asking anyone how they'd measure it like some have.

I'd always recognise there's bigger and more 'deserving' fans than I and some have started going to City way after me.

I wonder if anyone on here will be bleating if they miss out on away tickets to Utd or Liverpool 'cos of new or semi fans?

A good fan but a lucky one who started to go when things were looking up. Not that that was anything to do with you going, just stating you were lucky not to have to put up with what some of us put up with in the last 50 years. Though it did make us appreciate the good times even more. Going to City was always more about a day out and a few drinks with like minded people rather than success. That was just a bonus whenever it came along.
I do have to smile at the KC listening to some fans who think that a 0-0 draw at home in the Championship is cause for depression and vent their annoyance at how awful things are.
As long as fans accept that things aren't always going to be brilliant and only a handful of clubs will have sustained success that is fine by me. Even if they stop going if things are really bad that is OK. It is their choice of how to spend their money. Just as long as they don't, as some have done support some other club and then roll up again when things get better.

I must admit I wasn't too happy missing out on tickets for the glamour games and then hearing people who not long back used to laugh at me for supporting City telling people about what a good day they had at Old Trafford or Anfield or The Emirates. And there were more deserving people than myself who missed out whilst those with connections were enjoying the glamour games. The whole issue was badly handled but it is very difficult with only 3,000 tickets available. And not only for our club.
