I know a city fan who moved to Canada. When City got to Wembley he booked a flight to go see them. While the plane was on the tarmac ready to take off there was an announcement that the flight was cancelled! There was no time to get a later flight.
Interesting thread. In the face of a mocking local zeitgeist in the 80's, tubby lard onslaught, shameful glory hunting down the M62, negative media ****ery, boardroom ****ery, debt, receivership, decline, Nick Deacy, Dolan, Fish, Hateley etc etc there was a band of brothers who still supported City from the late 70’s to 2002. The Boothferry Park faithful 4K. Rarely got above 7K, sometimes dropped below 3K but those people know who they are and recognize many of those others that still stood shoulder to shoulder with them on the Kempton and Bunkers terraces defiantly singing “loyal supporters” and travelled to godforsaken wastelands like Rochdale, Hartlepool and Tranmere and were mocked for it in their own city! Ageing battle hardened faces still recognised and respected around the KC. Those that appreciated Wembley and Cardiff just that little bit more. HCSS were a small part of this as were other factions like the City Psychos, Good News Travellers, Action Group, Tigers 2000, Fanzines etc. Real fans.
I think there is a sad story about him that came out after his daughter won The Apprentice. I remember him as a real fan though.
His daughter gave him a proper pasting after she won The Apprentice... http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-436258/A-brutal-apprenticeship.html
Well, you should have done. People deciding to support some other team is a post 1950s thing. People couldn't afford to travel to watch other teams. Most worked Saturday morning and then went straight to the game and for the few who had TVs there were not many games on. Sickening to go in a pub in Hull or East Yorkshire and hearing people refer to Man Utd, Liverpool and others as "us" and "we".
Very true. Moved away in the 1980s but continued to attend. Was pleased to see a couple of old faces, not part of our lot, who used to go in the Well in the dark days of the Mike Smith years and later, who I hadn't seen for years, coming out of Wembley. A quick acknowledgement and we went on our way. With a feeling that not one of the inadequates who adopt clubs from places they have no connection with will ever know.
My point is that that isn't how people start supporting a club. They will usually start watching their local team and pretty quickly become a supporter but there's no rational decision about it.
I know people who support City without having any connection with Hull. I don't think of them as inadequates.
What do you mean by no connection with Hull? They have never had any family who lived in or near Hull? People in East Yorkshire technically have no connection with Hull but support City as it is their nearest club, same as people in other areas supporting their nearest club. If you have any kids and they were born after you left Hull they would technically have no connection to Hull but choose support City, the same as a lot of people do with other clubs for family reasons. I can't see you knowing people who genuinely have no connection through family or otherwise with Hull suddenly deciding to support City. Last saw Dave Dewberry around 1997/1998. He had stopped going to City some time before. Don't think anyone knows where he is. He has phoned a couple of people you will remember but withheld the number.
All the examples you mention have a connection with Hull in my view but I do know people who have no connection. Maybe because I have lived away from Hull for so long I'm more likely to have met these kind of people.
Other than Andy's match reports, Tigers Chat was full of southern ****s (Andy included) acting like the were better than anyone else. I linked in for about a month when it was like n email system in probably early 90s before I left them to their social ****ing.
Sorry, but I just can't see anyone in London with absolutely no connection to Hull and with no family with no connections to Hull deciding to support City. I would have a similar opinion on people opting to support City if they had no connection with the city as I do of people from Hull and East Yorkshire adopting teams from elsewhere. Which is not a high one.
For a start, at no point did I say these were people in London. OK. You can't see it. I'm not trying to convince you at all. You can continue to believe it is impossible.
I have no knowledge of Andy Medcalf ever living down south or even writing a match report. TigerChat wasn't for southerners either. Otherwise, your comments could be true.
**** me, if all of that article is factual I'm afraid, ardent City fan or not, Dave Dewberry sounds a full on arsehole!
