To be fair, the parts I visit are nearly all newly built. If you have this opinion of Sheffield I could only assume you haven't been for a while.
I find there's a lot more to do in Sheffield than Hull tbh, the nightlife's certainly a lot better.
    Rotherham.
As I've said, I think the nightlife's a lot better in Sheffield, and it's just a friendlier place, I know everyone will have their own experiences, but a night out is a lot more pleasant in Sheffield than Hull.

Beverley reminds me of a game I used to play on the Playstation called Silent Hill. Full of old zombie-like people pottering around buying flowers and mothballs.

    There's a good Tex-Mex resteraunt there though.

There are actually a couple of take aways in my town. But as I've already stated, everything costs a pound

East Riding folk amuse me, they're quaint and look funny with those chips on their shoulders. Having lived n a few bits of the East Riding, including Beverley, I found I was spending that much time traveling into Hull if I needed anything worth having or needed to do just about anything worth doing or meet people worth meeting, I kept moving back to Hull. I also found Hull City Council far, far superior to the East Riding, which is odd, given that the East Riding get far more income but burden Hull to fund so many of the facilities.

Them wannabe country types are quick to call Hull, but watch their lips go when you pass a bit back.:emoticon-0103-cool::1980_boogie_down:

Good comparison. And yes, the Tex-Mex restaurant is quite impressive - didn't help me with my shoe purchasing though

Beverley has alot of nice areas to live. The westwood is great all year round. It's good in summer for going for a walk and there's usually the horse races on and in winter when it's been snowing and you can sled down the hills and for bonfire night. The town centre's smaller pubs are great as you can get away from the packed chavy dumps, where it always kicks off with the meat head squaddies swannying about. Places like Angel, Sunn Inn, Cornerhouse etc you can usually get a decent pint in and you can hear yourself think. I really hate Cross Keys and Kings Head but that could be down to me being kicked out of there. What let's Bev down is there are no shops anymore- it's all granny shops and cafes. I always prefer to get the bus to Hull and go round there.

Hull's nightlife is better for me. Prinny Ave, Cott Road, Old Town, Newland Ave are decent areas. If i wasn't so skint i'd go out more round there.

Hulls night life is better, but I think that's down to the amount of young people living there due to all the schools, uni etc. Beverly has become less active during the night as it's started to fill up with older residents

Beverly's night life might appeal to some - you can't beat a bit of OAPs karaoke on a Tuesday night

Beverley would be a nice place to retire I imagine. It's a good place to visit maybe once a year for a family day out (Believe me I was dragged there for a number of days out). But saying that, if you was trying to take a relative who is visiting the area to a ,"nice historic place", you would take them to York which really is a great place to live.

Hull's nightlife is good. It's the only nights out I get on my current budget and I have a lot of fun.

It always seemed to me that alcohol is cheaper in hull rather than the surrounding areas, maybe that's why you have more fun ;)

Beverley has only really one main street area and these are rammed with shops that have closed down through going out of business or are shops i'd never step foot in like an old granny shop. The markets are a big pull for the town and bring alot of customers but you can't move an inch and it's hard to park anywhere if you haven't come on a bus.

I agree with you about historic wise- York is far ahead of Bev. There's only North Bar within/without, the Minster and the white rabbit statue that supposedly inspired the rabbit character in Alice in Wonderland. Can't really give any other reasons for coming. Not been to many restaurants. Hull wins over Bev for me. I saw someone say something about Yankee Burger on this or another thread- i loved that place as a kid.

Hehe not quite, I'm just a bit bored of Beverley to be honest but too much hassle to move back to Hull now. Beverley has its pluses in that's its a safe place to live I suppose, shame there's no music store/cinema/decent club or anything similar though.

I have lived all over the world and happen to be very picky on where I hang my hat. Far East, South America, Europe, USA and Canada all have great places that are obviously better than Hull to live but if you do'nt see the beauty of that wonderfull city of Kingston Upon Hull it's because you are too close to it and cant see the wood for the trees.
I brought my son last year for his first visit and quite frankly he was stunned by the town centre. If you walk from guildhall down to King Billy and on down to the old corpo pier and hosswash if you bother to look up some of the architecture is magnificent.
Holy Trinity Church, the old fruit market, Wilberforce House, the museum section, Black Boy on High St.
The old docks and prinny quay, queens gardens that used to be a dock but got filled in.I could go on forever but you know the place you just aint looking close enough.
So what if Sheffield has better night clubs that means nothing, oooow and meadowhall shopping centre wow, we have shopping malls ten times bigger than that here and I avoid them like the plague.
It's not far to the seaside if you want to go see the waves, lovely countryside over the wolds for a nice drive on a sunday, hell the place has everything and a history not many places can match (cept maybe York)
Coming to Hull is almost like a religious experience for me and I am so very proud of my home city.

Ps I forgot to mention them toads last year were very very cool indeed!

I'll have a go at answering that since nobody else has.

It'll be because all the media coverage of the place is about how crap the schools are, how deprived the area is, and focuses on chavvy families with no ambition to experiance anything beyond their daily trip to the chemist to get their methodone fix or achieve anything but be scrounging scum for the rest of their life. It doesn't matter what the reality is if that's what is fed to people as their only experiance of the place, though I think there is actually a lot of truth in it.

I can't see myself moving back either. The whole place has a mentality that makes it feel like success is a dirty word, people with ambition, certainly when you're talking at school end up getting the piss taken all the time and unless they're really strong willed it can knock it out of them. I certainly don't think the school league tables are representative of the intelligence available even when you allow for the suburbs being in the East Riding. It's the only place I've been, or known family to live where the surprised question when you've done your GCSEs is "are you staying on" rather than "are you dropping out". It's just a small thing, but it's like staying on for A-levels is some unusual thing where elsewhere it's expected even to the point where it's unusual for people to not want to go to uni, and I experianced that even going to an East Riding school from the other kids who lived in Hull. The ones who lived in the East Riding and had better off parents kept the desire to succeed because they saw what it brought them. The others even if they were bright either didn't have it or saw it drain as though they were accepting that things wouldn't change for them. I know that happens in poor areas elsewhere, but it seems to be to a much greater extent in Hull than I've seen elsewhere.

That though has nothing to do with having a desire to support the football team I've supported since being a kid, and that way back when we as fans fought to save giving up our own time and money in the process. I don't know if it's just me being a bit egotistical, but I always think that those of us who were fans back then and went through it must have a greater appreciation of getting to the PL and feel that because we played a part in keeping the club alive like we were more involved in making it happen. And that's not a pop at younger/newer fans, I've always said that without the long term fans (back to when we were getting sub 5k crowds) there wouldn't be a club, but without the newer fans as well there wouldn't be a successful club.
