I know this might upset some people (though it really shouldn't as I am clearly stating that this is merely my opinion) but I personally find it incredibly sad that some of you can't take any enjoyment out of Murray's fantastic achievement and instead would rather whinge, gripe and try to find fault with the man. It is absolutely ridiculous and if you ask me those people need to have a word with themselves.

The anti-Murray stuff I'm reading here is unlbelievable and I honestly wopnder what goes on in some people's heads sometimes. All this talk of "middle class elitism" is irrelevant and smacks of bitterness, the nonsense about how "99.9% of the country neither plays nor cares about tennis" and that it is a minority sport is an absolutely ludicrous (and factually incorrect) statement and please don't get me started on this ridiculous notion that Murray hates us all just because of a throwaway comment he made ten years ago in an interview - oh please <doh> I was at Glastonbury in 1998 on the day England had qualified for the quarter-finals by beating Colombia. Primal Scream were the next band on and Bobby Gillespie's opening gambit was how "****ing lucky" we'd been to get through and how he hoped the Argies stuffed us 4-0 in the next game. Unlike Murray he actually meant every word, and Bobby G really doesn't like the English much at all, but it certainly has never, ever bothered me and they're still one of my favourite bands and always will be.

I also get pissed off with this other ridiculous notion that Murray is in some way boring, miserable, without any form of personality and for some bizarre reason an "ungrateful toe-rag" - really??? These people who claim this actually know him personally do they? No, of course not, these type of comments absolutely smack of jealousy and clearly say far more about the person making them than they do about Andy Murray. For what it's worth I've never met him either, but from interviews that I've seen and read I personally have always found him to be a top lad with some good banter, and I would absolutely 100% rather chew the fat with him about his life than these negative whingers who just like sticking the boot in from behind their keyboards. And for anyone to simply brush off the fact he has donated all £1.6m of his prize money to charity by then pointing to how much he is going to earn from endorsements etc simply beggars belief <doh>

Just how bitter and twisted are some of you people? It's embarrassing to read some of these comments, it truly is.

Congratulations Andy, you can be (and no doubt are) immensely proud of achieving so very much in your short life so far, the kind of stuff people can only dream of and let me assure you 99.9% of the country are fully behind you and can recognise what a phenomenal talent you have. <applause>

I almost completely agree with you. No bitterness and twistedness, just my own observations which are largely irrelevant and mostly tongue in cheek; Now off to donate the same percentage of my career earnings to the tory party

I'm a big fan of Andy, as i was of Tim Henman. So rightly always happy to defend Andy Murray. Heard on radio yesterday he is sick of having to defend that comment he made 10 years ago, what happened -

Journo ask Mr.Murray as a joke - looking forward to seeing Scotland in the WC?
    murray - laughs
Journo - Who will you be supporting?
    Murray - anyone but England.

Clearly it was all tongue in cheek but then taken out of context, but i know a lot of (English) people that still use that as their main reason for any dislike towards Murray. He doesnt show much personality in interviews, so i assume a lot people use that comment he made and then use it to form their own incorrect opinion of him.

Just a shame Murray winning Wimbledon has given the Murray haters a platform to come out with their sixpence worth.

Personally, if Murray hasnt done enough to change your opinion of him then not sure what else he can do.

The only thing which slightly annoyed me was that fat prick Alec Salmonds behaviour firstly learn how to clap properly because you look like a sea lion and don't use sport to make political statements as it lacks class.

Murray's has done very well, especially considering the pressure his under, I do think the Tennis establishment in the country needs to have a word with itself.

Watching the thing on BBC last night, I was struck at how much he is still affected by terrible Dunblane massace, he came across almost as though he felt he didn't deserve to still be here.

I say well done, a huge amount of dedication has been put in for him to even get close, let alone win.

i haven't watched that yet guru - got it saved on the box though - good insight i assume? never met the lad but his persona in interviews is said to be at odds with his persona away from tennis (a bit like lendl again in that respect). i watched him play a charity match after queens the week before wimbledon this year involving lendl, henman and berdych, and all four were messing around and gave a great show for the crowd. they were even 'miked up' so the fans could hear them taking the piss out of each other. the way 1950 spoke about murray and tennis in general made my blood boil yesterday and perhaps wrongly i got into an argument but his views were so far wide of the mark that its good to see there are plenty of others who appreciate murray's achievements at the weekend and indeed before it. winning at flushing meadows was a huge achievement, winning gold at the olympics, four straight major finals in a row (injured for roland garros) and a genuinely down to earth, decent guy who should be praised for being a role model for young people, not slagged off for a comment he made in jest ten years ago. very proud of him and as i said before, i genuinely had a tear in my eye at match point. mind you, the number of match points he needed, i'm surprised i didn't have a break down! <laugh>

Yeah i watched the knock about with Henman, Lendl and berdych, also afterwards with the 'celebs' which was just so funny!

lendl has to take a huge amount of credit for the transformation from runner-up to winner, its amazing however much talent you have, if the mindset isn't right you won't win.

The thing last night was very insightful, about how he and his family really have dedicated a huge effort just for him to realise this dream.

First, let me say tennis is down my list of priorities as a spectator sport! Having said that, I always look out for how the Brits are doing, I would have watched the final on Sunday had I not been on a train coming home from a brilliant weekend, the fact that Murray won makes me disappointed to have missed it but not devastated!

I like to think that those who have posted some pretty horrendous stuff about Andy have done so in the form of hyperbole, I'd hate to think that any NCFC fans could be that vindictive!

it's no coincidence that murray has elevated himself to the top of the game since lendl was hired. their careers followed similar paths so you'd have to say it was an inspired appointment by the scot

They both lost their first four grand slam finals before winning the fifth! How many slams did Lendl win in the end? Can see it being the same as Murray.

Mind you, Laura Robson isn't doing too badly under Murray's old coach, Miles McLaggen, either!

Good great post munky and others. I too was annoyed about by some comments. I would class my self as a tennis fan and will watch all the grand slams and several of the masters tournaments too.
Currently I'm focused on the ashes. Very excited.

I truly rejoiced when Murray finally won and as someone who is not interested in Tennis BUT interested in British Sport. I believe that Murray's achievement in winning Wimbledon must go down as the greatest individual sporting achievement in our country's history without doubt!

The one thing that did make me angry was the crass and disgusting way that the politicians in the royal box (Cameron and Salmond) are trying to bask in Andy's glory. Especially that odious twat from north of the border! Anyhoo a great day for British sport and a great day for Andy Murray and one which will be remembered and revered for a very long time to come. <ok>

What i don't agree with is all this clamouring for him to be knighted!

Why as soon as we win something that we start all this rubbish, fine after they are retired. but i feel it devalues the title!

lets see how his career pans out from here. he's 26 for goodness sake. it's just cameron being a twat as usual. i don't think it would have been brought up otherwise. plenty of time for honours like that once he's retired and we can look back at his achievements in full <ok>

    One obscure statistic for you!

The UK has won the most Men's singles titles at Wimbledon with a total of 36 wins! Second comes the USA with 27 and then Australia with 12!

Mind you this was back in the days before the modern Open era.

Have to agree, there was no need for Salmond to be waving the Saltire flag around. Cheapened the moment a little.
Murray being a Brit from Scotland, there will always be an element of local pride and even some hardcore Scots who refuse to acknowledge he is British as well (not me).
Just keep politics out of it.

One of the things in life which has always pissed me off more than anything are these armchair commentators who have done relatively nothing exciting within their life time, but still feel qualified to come out with crap like "Tim Henman was **** at tennis, he didn't even win a major". Believe me, there are lots of these folk out there.

My retort to that is by saying "yes, you are absolutely right, Henman was a disgrace and an embarrassment to this country, he didn't win a single major and at one point was only ranked 4th best in the entire planet of 6 billion people, I don't know why he bothered pickngn up a racquet let alone spending hour upon hour upon hour training, practising and working out pretty much every day from a very young age. He should have just stayed at home and sat on his arse because that would obviously have made him qualified enough to comment".

    Or something like that anyway.........

This is not a dig at anyone on here by the way, rather certain people I have come across in the real world <ok>
