Well there's a truly high brow and persuasive argument. All that needs doing now is to work out for what.
I went to South Hunsley School and we once had Blazing Squad visit the school because a girl in our year entered a competition run by Viking FM and 'won'. As the performance ended and they came off stage one of them called Hull a ****hole (and the school as well). But they're Blazing Squad and they never mattered. Ever.
They shouldn't base their impressions on a fleeting visit, they should have traveled away from South Hunsley estates and had a look around the City Centre.
Hull is quite highly regarded by those who have spent any time here, or by those who know people from here, but it's pretty poorly regarded by everyone else. Personally, I ****ing love the place.
I agree OLM, I miss it when I'm home, but I wonder if it's the football team that keeps me coming back the most? I mean, do Peterborough or Middlesbrough fans look forward to coming home?!
Well we've truly had two sides of the argument here. Some are saying it's a **** hole, some are saying they ****ing love the place!! I live in the East Riding (in the middle of nowhere) and am only in the City maybe once a week. I personally think it's a decent place, but I wouldn't go as far as saying I love it. It's going under huge development at the minute and will undoubtedly be better in the future. And come on, you support the club, you can't claim it's a complete **** pit
My business is based in London, where I lived for a fair few years and it would be far more sensible for me to still live there, or in Brighton, or anywhere else that was an hour or so away from London, yet I chose to drive over 200 miles to my office every week. It's a price worth paying to live in the glorious county of East Yorkshire.
If Sarah Beeny - a property developer/housing expert can see the good in Hull, the residents of the city should be able to, too. A lot of people always go back to Larkin quote's but can never actually remember one 'word for word' - that's because a lot of them are a myth. The majority of anything negative he said was actually when he first arrived in the city in the 1950s - it was bound to be a dump, it had just been battered by bombs! If you watched the old TV programme when Sir John Betjeman visits him in Hull and the scene's that inspires him, he is asked why he doesn't like the place - he says 'I don't dislike the place' and continues to say he wouldn't want to be anywhere else, it's a place that allows him to be himself. They visit the cemetery on Spring Bank West and he says it's one of the most beautiful and inspiring places he's ever visited. There has been a new trail created to show off the scene's which inspired him: http://www.thelarkintrail.co.uk/the-trail.php As has been said, outsiders who visit and spend actual time here usually leave impressed... Media coverage of Larkin25: The Times carried an editorial on Larkin which praised Hull as ‘a remarkable place’; an editorial in The Guardian thought Hull’s idea of putting a statue of a poet on its station should blaze a trail for other towns; and a reporter for Timeout wrote after his Larkin-prompted visit to Hull that it was ‘possibly the nicest city in England’.
Yes, I was just telling Febbos what the general opinion of people from outside of Hull was. I don't agree with it, but then again I do prefer living in Sheffield and can't see myself living in Hull again.
In the past it was ridiculed by everyone including the media. TV shows picked up how stereotypically working class & northern the city was (as already said) ie flat caps, broad accents, unemployed, they latched on to the old fishing industry that was crumbling. They said we were seemingly dafter people, and also that our institutes weren't up to scratch. For example, the quote from Blackadder "you failed to see which one was a great university- Oxford, Cambridge, Hull". Others are "Hull is one letter away from Hell" and i've had "Hull people are all scum" said to me on a bus in Leeds, but what do you expect from the wessies. What wasn't observed by these southern media types was alot of people moved here for work and have had alot of decent things to say about the area and it's very warm welcoming, friendly people. Now the City and East Yorkshire has got a slighter better reputation since then. The university is very popular with students. Crime rate isn't as high as other places in the north and far off the stats places like London get. Beverley and the surrounding areas are posh and would boost the perspective on the area from the national media, if they hadn't been taken from the Hull boundaries, when Humberside was enforced on us. And the sports teams are on the up.
This is the reason why we need the funding of the Allam's. We have to boost the city and any funding would be fantastic to the image of the area. People always tend to moan a fair bit but I believe the city is getting there just about. I live in Sheffield and I live directly next to the train station which is incredibly rough. Yet the city centre is fantastic aesthetically (in most parts). I wish the council could take a leaf out of their book a little bit. I love Hull and East Yorkshire and with investment the city could boom!
I think the city centre is magnificent, its just the areas around it that bring it down. I also think Hull has lovely buildings e.g. the museum, prinny quay looks quite good, but i think it lacks buildings with a wow factor if u understand what i am saying. If u don't it's hard for me to describe
I don't think Hull's that bad, but there's just nothing to do. Apart from watching City, there's nothing that I want or need that I couldn't do in Beverley. It's not that what's available is of poor quality, just that there's very little there. What you have to consider is that it wasn't too long ago that Leeds was the same, but huge funding from the council has turned it into a great place to live, work and study. It's also a bloody good night out. If Hull's ever to become like that, it's going to take a VERY long time. I feel sorry for Hullensians, because they're generally a friendly bunch, but the Council's ****ed them over good and proper - always has done, always will.
Can't understand why you think others might perceive us to be poor, thick insular ****s thats all???? Personally I find Sheffield to be a very dirty place. The walls of its buildings seem to be ingrained with centuries of smoke and filth??? The Arena has merit and Meadowhall is a good day out but the rest seems so very Victorian to me.
