BBC has us, Newcastle and Hull linked with this perennial disappointment. Is this the best we can do?
For the right price and wages I would happily take him he has scored goals his whole career in the premier league! £5 million max and under 50k a week!!!
Whilst I don't really want Bent, I'm not sure you can really call a player with 103 goals in 245 games a perennial disappointment. For comparison purposes only (very much not comparing their quality), Berbatov has 90 goals in 211 games.
Question would be from me would Bent be better than Rodallega ? On his top form I'd say yes, but there's the problem, he's not been on his top form for years. But the worry for me is us being linked with Cattermole from Sunderland, don't rate him, Baird is better than him. Reminds me of a clogger like Micheal Brown, more of a liability than anything.
I wouldn't want us to sign him, but (conversely!) I think he'd do all right if we did. As others have said, his goalscoring record is excellent throughout his career (he even scored 17 during his last season with Spurs, which surprised me when I just looked up his stats). I think his style of play would suit us too, partnered with either Berbatov or Ruiz. But he does seem to have a knack of falling out with people, and I don't think he'd be happy to be at Fulham if he wasn't starting every week. He's 29, meaning that he's not going to improve as a player either. I'm not saying he's started his decline, but that's the only way he's going, whether it's now or in the next few years. He wouldn't be a bad addition on the pitch, but there are far, far better ways of spending the money, both in terms of transfer fee and wages. I read today that Charlie Austin is expected to have a medical with Hull today. He's available at a similar transfer fee (Hull said the other day that £4m was their final take-it-or-leave-it offer, so the fee is probably around that mark) and almost certainly lower wages. He'd be a much better option, in my opinion, and if not him then there are plenty of others who would be a better fit for our squad.
I'm not concerned about this believe he falls out with people, in reality it has only been Redknapp at Spurs after Redknapp publicly tore him to shreds and dropped him after missing a sitter ( every striker has done that at some point) and also Lambert at Villa but it clearly looks like Lambert has been trying to force him out to get rid of his wages and Bent is rightly peed off at this. If you play him and let him get on with it he will score goals he has proven this for years
We(Hull) are not remotely interested in signing Darren Bent. He's got two years to run on a £70k a week contract and Bruce doesn't like him, it's a complete non-starter for us.
Bent no no no,as previously said he has been on the slide for the past 2 sasons and he is gettingb older. He would want at least 50k pw,a 3 yr contract and at what 5mil to buy its got to be a joke. I am sure we could get Rhodes or Austin for a couple of mil more +add a utility player. ie Trotta.
He scored 21 league goals in the last three years - just three last year. If he's not good enough for Villa, he's not good enough for us. It's true his scoring history looks impressive on paper, but 56 goals were in Div 1 and the Championship for Ipswich.
I think that's a little harsh. If you discount last season, when he was rarely used because Paul Lambert seemed to take against him from the start, his league record for Villa is 18 goals in 38 appearances. Before that 32 in 58 for Sunderland is also impressive. I agree that we shouldn't be in for Bent, but you can't dismiss his goalscoring record - he's been a consistent goalscorer in the Premier League as well as in the Championship.
Agreed Captain, all this Bent bashing is nonsense. He only scored three last season for Villa because he wasn't being used, initially this was due to trying to get him off the wage bill and eventually because Benteke came into such a good run of form so there was no displacing him. Bent came back at the end of the season when Benteke was suspended and scored a goal did he not? I think he's a little too old and wages are a tad too high but you can't call him a 'disappointment' or 'failure' because he's succeeded at wherever he's been, whether it be a struggler (Charlton) top team (Tottenham) or mid table (Villa, Sunderland). For the right price I would give it a go, especially as Jol doesn't seem interested in the likes of Austin.
No, but I am capable of reading his quotes in the local newspaper about players we are and aren't interested in and you can google his comments on Bent when he left Sunderland, it's hardly a secret.
Lol, perennial disappointment. Like everyone has said, he's scored goals wherever he's gone. He actually scored 6 last season, including cup games. But ultimately, no, I think we'd be better off looking at younger players with a bit more desire.
I wouldn't take quotes as much proof to be honest, they don't really count for a lot these days. A week ago Samba was determined to fire QPR back to the Premier League. Will Austin be your main striker then?
Morning sir. I shall indeed be at the Cottage this season. Though I've cocked up and let the missus book the holiday this year and now I'm away for the opener against Chelsea. At least it's Mourinho's first game in charge, so will almost certainly be televised, so I'll be watching poolside.
I expect that Austin will be our main striker, though I expect us to sign another permanent striker(possibly Katlego Mphela) and possibly a third one on loan. We've got a good defence, we've got a decent midfield but lack a good defensive midfielder(it looks like Palacios is the target) we've now signed a decent keeper and it looks like we'll possibly also get a new No.2(Steve Harper), so it's just up front that we're still a bit weak.
