Rodriguez played out wide basically all season and Ramirez is, you would assume, perfectly able. It doesn't matter what their "original" position was if they're perfectly capable elsewhere - Bale was originally a left back and now he's an incredibly good second striker. Rodriguez and Ramirez can definitely count as wide options if we pick up Wanyama and Banega (though I'd certainly not mind another coming in for depth, even if it is Bueno).

Seeing Lambert and Lallana regarded as rotation players does make my heart sink a little, but I'm sure they'll give Poch a real headache over his team selection.

I'm sure he can do it, but Lallana needs to up his game this season.

That's why we pay him the big bucks. Better players on the bench = win, next year I want to hear everyone else complaining about how Southampton never deserved that late winner.

Both Ramirez andRodrigo have played as wide men for most of their careers. The day of widemen has been and gone, width is now provided by the fallbacks and the three attacking players are more in the middle. I'm sure that teams like Spam will continue with wingers, but its too easy for organised teams to isolate opposition wingers

Yeah, that's more or less what I was going for. Traditional wingers are one-dimensional, they just run up and down and have very little possession. A good modern formation has a combination of deep midfielders and advanced midfielders, all of whom are multi-talented and can pass. This country is taking a really long time to grasp this concept.

Interesting. I tend to agree. However, I'm less concerned about the country grasping the concept, more concerned that the players do. At times last season I'm not entirely convinced that they did.....

By and large, i completely agree. Not once have I been asking for us to accommodate a 'traditional' winger in our first XI. I've got no issues with the likes of Gaston, Jay, and Lallana playing out wide. And I'm all for Clyne and Shaw providing the more natural width.

My point is that a good squad is a well-rounded one, which covers all number of bases. Right now however, I look around our squad and fail to see that pacey, direct type of guy, who is happy to take a full back on (and in an absolutely ideal world, can whip a quality ball in too). Having that option on the bench or on the fringes of the match day squad can only be a good thing, IMO.

De Ridder aside, we haven't really had one since Chamberlain. Maybe, maybe, Mayuka could turn out to be that guy - that would not only be great as it would save us money, but it would also mean that we're not left with someone who can basically only play one position (as Mayuka can seemingly play through the middle too).

strong and powerful, but I don't rate him as a top performer. I'd be a bit disappointed if was a Mackem.

Part of the anti-racism task force. Nice to see him link up with Di Canio.
