Bates needs to spend next year otherwise we will be left behind. Would like to see 4 defenders, a holding midfielder and hold on to the front 5 we have already and we will be alright.

Hmm first thought is how Hoilett sounds like toilet and the amount of abuse he'd get from the wind-up merchants if he didn't get scoring...

He got five goals in 17 for Blackburn which would probably translate into a decent amount in the Championship if their OS is right about him being pacy (which goes a long way outside the Premiership). Then again, it's really pointless signing strikers when, like CodfatherofSoul says, what we really need is players in the middle of the park and in defense. Might as well use our resources on signing some quality to stop us conceding so many.

Exactly Loiner - if we conceeded half the goals we did last year but scored the same amount we would have finished in top 6 for sure maybe top 2!!!

This says to me "HELLO"??? its not Rocket Science.

I agree i dont see bates spending a penny. We will likely lose a few aswell. Johnson gone on a free and snoddy and gradel could well be snapped up if price is right.
He needs to dip his greedy hands in his pocket

To be fair, we did spend a little bit last season, £500k on Collins, £200k on Bruce, £300k on McCormack. Agreed a team with real ambition should be spending more than £1m but Grayson could have done better with that money in my opinion. McCormack was an (eventual) hit, the other two were bad misses which, if we'd bought better replacements, could have got us promotion. O'Brien and Clayton's transfers were undisclosed - that could have cost about £500k as well. Not defending Bates here BTW, the ratio of income:expenditure is shockingly skewed when you consider how much we've taken in from cup ties, TV money, Delph, Milner, compensation, insane ticket prices etc. over the last couple of seasons.

However when you think about it, we've made some cracking signings in the last couple of years with Becchio, Snodgrass, Beckford, Gradel, Connolly and (at first) Schmeichel, all of them for low prices. But it seems players in those positions are just easier to get on the cheap than the real core of the team in central midfield. Forest didn't spend more than half a million on Radoslaw Majewski IIRC, a signing like that would be great if our scouting team get their arses into gear. Real leaders are in short supply and we need to either sign a free transfer who'll want big wages or get a permanent transfer for a fee. If we fail to do that properly, we'll be left behind for sure.

And you tried to claim that as a Millwall thing whereas I was pointing out through Enfield that it could just be his natural Yorkshireness. Jeez Louise.
