Brazil midfielder Paulinho will undergo a medical at Tottenham ahead of a £17m move from Corinthians.

Personally I wouldnt see that area of the pitch as a priority for Spurs. I'd be more concerned about bringing in two forwards (one being a top striker) and a central defender.

At Porto AVB often set up his front 4 a bit like this:

    -----------AM-----------
    --W----------------F----
    -----------ST------------

Winger and Forward could swap for left or right.

At the end of last season Bale was incredible in the AM role. So Lennon could have plenty of chance.

    -----------Bale----------
    --Lennon----Damiao--
    -----------Villa-----------

But Spurs also have a lot of AM option with Sigurdsson, Holtby, Dembele, Bale and Dempsey.

I guess it depends on the game at hand.

  8. That looks inbalanced to me. Guess it depends whats behind it, would need two DMs considering they have attacking fullbacks IMO

I did also think Kyle Walker behind Lennon in a 433 wont work.

At the end of last season Holty was playing on the right a lot.

If they miss out on one of those forwards, Dempsey is still a fine option to have.

  10. Villa plays from the left a lot so I'd swap him with Damiao

I just based the shape on seeing Damioa play on the left at the Olympics and scoring 6 goals. They could go either way around.

  12. Not seen Damiao so I'll take your word on it. Anything has to be an improvement on Adebayor... <ok>

Damiao gets compared to Brazilian Ronaldo. I imagine he only played on the left at the Olympics to let Neymar play central. But Damiao looked better at this particular tournament.

Looks like Mikhtaryan is off to Borussia for 25m. This all coming in the space of a few days of public interest/negotiations.

    1. The manager wouldn't have named Liverpool if we weren't the major interested party at the time. This proves we were actively trying to sign him.

    2. Borussia's interest was only recent, as no one at Shakhtar ever mentioned a second club. They would have if they had known, to promote a bidding war.

What this means is that whoever was doing the negotiations was useless. Our interest has been going on for more than a month and we couldn't tie up a deal? Were we offering peanuts?

The scary part is is that we definitely wanted him. Shakhtar made that clear. So unless we suddenly changed our minds within the past few days, this is a failure by Ian Ayre. This man should not be doing transfers. He should go back to marketing and communications, where he knows how to strike a deal.

At the end of the day I'm not bothered, if he chose another club that is fine. There are many other players of his quality that would come. We have plenty of time for new targets. But if the negotiating team failed to sell us as an ambitious club and couldn't get a player from Ukraine to sign for us, we need a new negotiating team.

Disappointed we didn't sign him, he'll shine at Dortmund this season imo. That said, 25mill is a huge amount of money for us and there are other options available at way below that price - leaving some left for a CB or DM.

Ayre isn't the finest negotiator in the world, we all know that, but I do think we wanted Mkhitaryan for closer to 20mill rather than paying 25.

We have to be realistic and accept that we can't offer the things that some other clubs can at the moment.
We have to rely on shrewd signings and build a team to get us back to the level where we can attract top players despite competition from clubs in a better position.
Occasionally we might be able to persuade a player that we're headed for big things and he might want to be part of that, and at other times we may find a gem who can't get regular first-team outings elsewhere. Other than that, we have to accept that most players will look at the short-term gain of moving to an established CL team.
We can't put the cart before the horse- we need to get back up to compete for the CL places.

We didn't agree a price with Dortmund, as far as I'm aware. Mkhitaryan was happy to join us a few weeks ago, we just weren't prepared to offer what Dortmund wanted. It's not the case of being 'realistic' because clubs can offer more, we offered enough to get him to join us, we just didn't want to pay 25mill and Dortmund would/could.

I guess you mean we weren't prepared to meet what Shakhtar wanted?
I was talking about the whole package, we can't offer CL football and Dortmund can, so any player is likely to take that into account. There are a lot of factors which lure a player to a club and we don't tick quite as many boxes these days.

My point was that failing to get a player isn't necessarily down to the ineptitude of our negotiating team, and we as fans have very little idea of what's going on behind the scenes.

    I'm kind of happy.

I agree that there was something behind the scenes and for me there are 3 things.

    1. split ownership is an alarm bell in my mind

    2. player refused to train.. this is a huge red flag on attitude for me.

    3. we've never opened our mouths about him so everything else was basically others mouthing off. If we are to believe it all we were said to have triggered the release clause, then there's no such thing and no bids occured, then the guy could buy himself out. The thing is the english press got so convinced of it they made out we were all over this but nothing at all happened, no bid. so think on that. interest is not a bid, nor is it something to launch off on ayre over.

So all in all... I don't mind, eriksen and alderweirld are the double signing reputedly availble for less money than this chump.

give me one example where you can back that slander of ian ayre.... didhe sell us to G&H, did he buy carroll? or is it cos he only bid 3mil for dempsey? Is it cos Rodgers decided to get shut of carroll the day before the transfer window shut??
