Have said on here that I like the look of Gayle and wanted us to have him ... no point speculating - if he turns out to be the next 'Ian Wright' (or Alan Smith) i.e plucked from non-league then goes on to play for England (or whomever if he's not english) then that £8.5 m will look fantastic business - if not - well there you go. Can't compare him to Chris Wood, he's far more mobile for a start and more of an 'inside-forward' (old fashioned terminology) than an out and out centre-forward in terms of his play ... would have loved to have seen him 'paired' with Chris Wood.
So given the choice of Chris Wood for 1.25M or Dwight Gayle for 8.5M who would you have? Rickie Lambert and Grant Holt wasnt the most mobile forwards about but it didnt stop them scoring loads of goals in this league and going on to be successful in the prem
Impossible to answer ... only time will tell (plus I haven't seen enough of Gayle - what little I have seen did impress me). As to Lambert and Holt - I'd say 'effective' rather than 'successful' at this point... both have done OK, Lambert more than Holt to date - but even then I expect Southampton to be looking more to players like Jay Rodriguez for taking them 'forward' ...
