Bizarre comment from Nixon when you consider Cortese has been our chairman for four seasons and has overseen plenty of deals over that time.

My speculation on Nixon would be that he gets the vast majority of his information from Agents. Cortese and Agents don't always have the best relationship.
If you go on enough lunches with these agents and they're saying how difficult Cortese can be then its bound to impact your opinion on him.

On the contrary, from Nixon's point of view the Wanyama deal would have been done a week or two ago if he'd have been a little more flexible on this matter. He perceives precisely this as "inexperience" in a market where these payments are ubiquitous.

Im quite happy for Cortese to be a tight arse if I'm honest, the last thing I want is for us to pay miles over the odds to agents and wages.

Probably more annoyed that Cortesse, not being a pushover, made him look like he doesnt know what is going on

Personally, I'm the opposite. I trust that cortese won't bankrupt us again, and its not my money! Spend away, and keep us all entertained please Nicola...

Yes, that was sort of my take on it: Nixon basing his views on the more 'traditional' way of dealing with transfers (a la Harry), and thus in his view we should have the experience to know that signing players require paying agents fees. Refusing to pay is very much Cortese's fault.

But of course that's not the way we do things, and rightly so completely. Just a shame that all other clubs don't follow our lead - if they did, agents would have no choice but to lower their demands greatly.

Well, some of our closest competitors are making moves for new strikers. Arouna Kone supposedly will join Everton in the next couple of days, and West Brom might try and bring in Nicolas Anelka.

I don't think I'd be particularly keen on either of those, which says a lot about our ambitions.

I know what you mean, I just hope we don't overreach and find the likes of Osvaldo and Damiao turning out to be unrealistic targets and finding all the realistic ones have already joined Everton or West Brom...

Cortese's never let us down before but I have to admit to feeling a little nervous about our lack of success in the transfer market so far. Not that I believe Nixon that we're floundering, but a signing or two this week would be very welcome.

As yet I don't think Everton are one of our closest competitors. They're established in the top seven and European football is not unusual for them. West Brom might be, but even that could be stretching it a little.

Taken on its own the fact we've only made one signing isn't a problem. The fact we've also been linked with a bunch of players, presumably had at least two other bids accepted and been turned down by players is slightly worrying.

On agent fees I think that, in terms of becoming a more successful club, being in the middle of the agent spend table would be better than being right at the bottom.

So one? Not that bad considering how many players we have been linked to.

Not necessarily turned down by him, just that we're low on his desire list.

A cursory glance at SaintsWeb and Twitter confirms my suspicions, we're headed for a large scale meltdown amongst the Saints fan base within days!

Perhaps that's technically true but he's effectively turned us down.

If reports are to be believed we've only had two bids accepted so only two players have had the chance to turn us down. One of those players has effectively turned us down and the other hasn't been keen to sign for us, although nobody seems prepared to rule a deal out quite yet. It's certainly not good.

We're still 46 days away from the first game of the year, and 60 days from the close of the transfer window. There's time.

Yep and despite us knowing a few bits here and there about transfers we don't what really is going on. I'll wait until the end of the window to see whether I will have a break down or not.

We've had two bids accepted for players and neither of them has (yet) signed for us. One has been quoted as saying he doesn't really want to come here. The other's agent has been quoted as saying our contract offer was far too low. There aren't a lot of positives there.

Of course this isn't the end of the world and we may sign some fantastic players this summer but at the moment it's not looking as good as we hoped and that is a slight cause for concern.
