According to Mark Douglas we did bid for Aubameyang earlier this week, but not the double bid which included his teammate Zouma. He also reported this morning that we were considering going back in for Aubameyang with an improved offer.

According to Mercado we have just made that improved offer. We all need a ray of sunshine at the moment - let us hope this is true:

El Newcastle ofrece 18 millones de euros por el delantero gabonés del Saint Etienne, Pierre Aubameyang.

Like everything else it's a case of wait and see. Heaven knows we need some extra bodies in.

We scraped through to the end last season but we don't want to go through the same thing again.

Looks like he's off to Dortmund as Lewandowski's replacement. According to his dad, we never put a bid in. Suprise suprise

Lol. I've tried to stay positive thinking that by the weekend I'd be able to point at Aubameyang and say "see? what were we all worried about." Oh dear.

Aww, sh!tbags. This is all gonna turn out as bad as it looked, isn't it?

The rumours about Dortmund seem pretty much that. Could be true but all seem to be based on an unsupported report out of Italy, of all places.

Prepare the arsenic but don't drink it yet.

Such a depressing window so for and we're only two days in. West Ham have signed Carroll and have now bid for Bony according to SSN. Villa, Fulham, Sunderland, Cardiff (just paid 7.5m for a striker) and Norwich have all strengthened even if some of the players are untested at this level.

If we end up with Darren Bent and James Tomkins i'll be sick. I know PEA going to Dortmund is just a rumour at present but it seems a lot stronger than the rumours linking him to us.

Don't get me wrong, PEA should be going to someone like Dortmund and not us, think he's done enough to warrant a decent move to a 'tier 2' team. But it just seemed like we might be doing something. Now, though, it just smacks of Luuk De Jong last year, almost identical. A lot of unofficial noise, then *pop* he's off to Germany and we scratch our heads before the official line, on Sept 1st, of "duhhhhh, we tried....duhhhh, we really did."

Got to agree that if we end this window with fcking garbage like Bent it will tell us all we need to know about this seasons aspirations. In the darker moments, this is precisely what I envisage. The only thing I cling onto is that neither Carr nor Kinnear (no matter that you have to go back a decade or two) are renowned for going for the obvious. They've both traditionally put youth and opportunity ahead of 'experience'.

Just to be as positive as possible, the only actual quotes from anyone so far are from the man himself identifying England as his preferred destination and speaking nicely about us.

They're several days old, mind, but they do exist while all the other stories have no substantiation from anywhere.

I'm not a big one for pinning all hope on signing certain players. I'd like PEA but there are plenty options out there. Patience is key, its only July 2nd. I don't expect a great deal but I think getting depressed this early is none too good for your own personal well being. It may well be exciting t sign 10 players, but it carries its own issues. We only need 1 or 2. A couple more than that if there are departures.

I agree that Dortmund are more his level. I mean they play in front of 70k/80k every week, can offer Champions League football and have won trophies recently. It's just baffling that whilst everyone else is doing business we have Pardew on holiday this week and JK on holiday next week. I mean where's the planning???

Yeah this is true but is just smacks of De Jong all over again like Nedders said. I think it's all a smoke scree as is Ashley really going to sanction a 15 million plus bid for any player?

I tend to agree, but I mean PEA and Bony are looking like they could be going to other clubs, there's no way we'll spend big on Rhodes or Austin so all the signs point to Bent. Maybe saying it's depressing is a bit much but it's certainly worrying.

It's more the seeing clubs around us strengthening and signing well that gets me down. That and the whole Kinnear nonsense. If we do only need 1 or 2 they both need to be strikers, one who can compliment Cisse and one who is a decent backup... Seeing good options go to our relegation rivals while we do nowt is always going to be a sore point.

The question is whether we're doing nothing.

At their worst, Ashly and Co are what happened last summer. It could be happening again = suicide

At their best, Ashley and Co produce sudden signings (me never having heard of the player to realising he's world famous to everyone but me to signed and wearing the shirt all in one hour) that are as sudden as they are welcome. That could be happening again = happy bunnies.

Trouble is, the current press stories are equally consistent with both.

I think the worrying bit was when JFK said last week he'd be "sitting down to discuss targets with Graham Carr". Doesn't really look like the actions of a club with their finger on the pulse. Given that the manager's not around right now, then when he is back the DoF has farked orf on 'olleeday....well, it just looks about as well though through as the pre-season training in South Africa. I mean Scotland...

This is the thing - even in trying to stay positive, it looks very likely that it will be a desperate scrabbling around for 2 or 3 bums on seats, with everyone at the club pointing a finger at January saying "but we did all our business then". Rationally, I'd put my house on Bent being one of - at best - 2 senior arrivals. I live in hope that some miracle is around the corner. Joe Kinnear must know that the eyes of the Geordie World are upon him and his first signing, so with that I cling to some minor hope that it HAS to be a good one. Else all he's doing is highlighting everyone's point.

Then again, Kinnear might think England International and consistent goal-scorer Darren Bent actually IS a good signing.
