Well we need to hope that they perform better than Sammy and co when called upon. Our fringe youngsters last season failed to step up to the plate and that was a large part of what resulted in a disappointing season. The talk after the Brighton game was of needing to strengthen the squad. When injuries to first team players occur, as they inevitably will, we should not find ourselves in the same situation of being forced to start with youngsters who might not be ready, with no other option open to us.

Perch played in the game vs Brighton and went off at half time. He was at CB. Fast forward a year and if we're without both Colo and Saylor - as we were in Jan, hopefully less likely to be repeated - we will have MYM as CB, currently alongside Williamson though more likely with the new arrival. There is a need to strengthen, but we already have. I just don't think this is the shambles of a decision some are making it out to be, plus we're making a lot of assumptions about what he wanted from a new contract, what he wanted from the team, who he is in the dressing room, etc. It is what it is, it's just nothing to cry about. But this desperate age of media information makes it a story.

Gunna really miss him. Even barton didn't manage to change my initial opinion as much as this man. He kept his head down after a dismal start and became a player whose every tackle made me go 'yes perch u ****ing ledge!'. it was the one of the few plus points in a dismal last season. Think he's best at right back to be honest, can we keep him please? I promise to take good care of him!

All 4 will be on loan more than likely next season. None are as good as Perch currently in their chosen position bar maybe Dummett. The cold hard facts are that James Perch made 29 appearances in total last season. Perch has proven time and again he is willing to be the team man and come out quietly when the so called big names are returning from injury/suspension. So I also hate to state the obvious, the Man U reference is completely relevant as it is all relative.

I can accept if Perch is making noises he wants to go, or there are deals in the offing for players playing in that role. However people are not commenting on that. They are simply commenting on the hypothetical situation where Perch departs because we believe we no longer require his services, picking up a paltry 700K. Particularly when you consider the situation with Raylor missing all of next season.

I'd love to be a kid again too but as it stands I'm not sure why you'd choose such a reference? Comes across a bit patronising. But hey, whatever waxes your willy. <laugh>

So with Perch leaving I imagine there has actually been a close look at personal and he has been deemed not good enough (which is ****ing insane imo). So this surely means we will be rid of Obertan and that useless excuse for a footballer in Shola Ameobi for good? If the latter stays it will confirm us as a ****ing laughing stock.

Aren't you one of those who claims Anita deserves much more of a chance? Besides which, of JP's 29 appearances last season he started only 6 after we spent in January, and of those he was subbed off in all but 2!! Again, let's not forget that this was a time of transition and we were still beset to injuries in specialist areas effectively forcing his inclusion. To me it states he was never really part of a bigger picture and if we are actually 'strengthening' the squad, he's unlikely to be part of the plan nor willing to play such a bit part at 28 years of age.

The "discussion" looks at half a story, selective in assumptions and ignorant of facts. Patronising is the least I was going for, downright insulting was the aim. Why? Because at the moment it seems every NUFC decision is gleefully met at face value. At least we haven't gone down the root of baseless claims that Pardew's being undermined by decisions going deliberately against him....

Yes Anita will need more game time this season given he's had a chance to settle. He's a good player and I can see him reducing the number games Perch will play. He made 27 last season anyway. What you can't do though is make the same mistake as last season, reduce the squad size, and just bank on everyone staying fit.

It may not happen of course. They may not sell Perch, they may sign a replacement if they do, they may do any numbers of things. That's the point of the discussion though, is there a good sale? Under what conditions would it be ok, under what circumstances would it be rank awful? To me it would be daft to buy no midfielders or full backs, sell Perch. Wasn't the whole point of Jan to bring the squad up somewhere round the numbers needed? However if they sign replacements then all well and good, the only downside being you are left with no utility man to plug gaps in times of crisis.

Insult away for me, I love nowt better than people getting excited on internet forums. Highly amusing. Essentially you are getting excited because a few folk think selling Perch under circumstances would be nonsensical. I can't see anything you've offered which dispels that theory.

There's at least 9 I'd want gone before James Perch, Gael Bigirimana should be his replacement.

I'd have sooner seen him stay on as manager than that buffoon JK.

I've been a Perch supporter since he gave Jonas a superb game when we played Forest in the Championship.

But he's never going to be an average Premiership performer. We really need better in our midfield and defence. This deficit in our team was the reason we conceded so many goals that almost sent us down.

Good luck to James Perch and thanks for your great workrate. But IMO even as a squad player, we should be bringing far younger and more talents players into the team. Doesn't seem we've got much of a deal mind, especially to the club that I would want as a first choice to go out of business.

I think it's more that we desperately need goals from midfield. Holding or deep-lying midfielders we have in abundance, whether they are destroyers or creators. Whether it's two or three in the middle, you can see how far down the pecking order Perch would be. Or maybe "should" be. I think he was probably fortunate to get the game time he did last year, but this time around I am hopeful that Pardew will drop the idea that Sissoko is an AM and I'm also quite hopeful that our injuries should be at least marginally better.

Good luck James and thanks for your efforts. Never a grumble, played where asked and always gave 100%.

Why you all getting mad at the board for selling Perch? He's garbage, probably worth a quarter of the sale price

This is the Newcastle board - if we're not mad about something, it's not worth breathing. It's called the Kinnear Effect.

Kinnear did say that he would ship out players who aren't good enough. Perch and Simpson have gone. Perch I'm cool with. I would have kept Simpson.

If we play better then it's called progress. If we offload more and buy badly/ or buy nobody, we'll go down. Either way Ashley gets about £100m income if the ground fills or not.

We're not all getting mad, we've been mad for years, it's a pre-requisite to being a Toon fan. There'd be no fun if you were a sane person with a humour bypass.

I first turned mad in 1959 and have enjoyed every nonsensical minute of it.

As a Newcastle supporter, just how mad is it possible to get? Could you become so completely and utterly insane, that you go full circle and meet yourself coming the other way ?
just how bonkers is bonkers ?

I don't go around in circles, I go from the house to SJP and then from SJP to to house, a bit of east to west and then west to east.
