Juan Senastian Elcano. Amazing story, Magellan didn't set out to cross the globe, only to find a secure way through for his ships to sail to the Spice Islands. It was Elcano who decided to push westwards after Magellan's death and thus completed the first known circuit of this orb.
Magellan died after agreeing to kill a warlord who he personally wanted to convert to Christianity; however he felt duty-bound to follow the request of a powerful overlord on the Philippines, and was killed in the attempt.

B1-A. Detectable by radar, bomb-loading process too lengthy (could take up to 24 hours)

Sadly, yes. The plane I'm thinking of came into service in 1960.

    That's the one ;)

So what were the 2 major operational problems with it (apart from a high accident rate)

    Well, where do I start?

It was difficult to fly, it had a limited range and payload and was very expensive to operate. In fact I can't understand why they ever bothered with it!!!!

Also, and critically, with the development of Soviet SAM's it needed to fly at low altitude to evade radar screening and could not achieve the speeds it's very expensive production costs enabled it to do because of the denser air at low altitude.
