Sunderland boss Paolo Di Canio is making a £7million bid for Wigan winger Callum McManaman – and try to scare off Roberto Martinez’s Everton, writes Alan Nixon of the Sunday People .

Di Canio has started official moves for the speedy and skillful Scouser, who hit the headlines last season in his breakthrough campaign. The Black Cats are willing to splash out big money on him in an attempt to take him out of Martinez’s range.

Everton chief Martinez likes McManaman, 22, but will have to outbid Di Canio to land him – and that may put the move to the Toffees off.

In the market: New Everton manager Roberto Martinez is looking to add to his squad

Martinez has other priorities to spend his limited budget on – so Sunderland could win the chase if the player wants to go. Wigan boss Owen Coyle would prefer to keep McManaman, who ended the season injured and may be touch and go for the start of the next one.

However Coyle will sell at the right price and if he can find a suitable replacement in some frantic summer dealing at the DW Stadium.

Rate the lad, but agree with Sid, £7million seems too rich.

Will Everton want to pay big money for a player they released as a 16 year old?

I remember sitting with a certain Graham Lilley (NE Fa gadgy) saying john terry would be the next england captain some 12/14 years ago and getting laughed at if not with a sort of eh?

This is the second time i've said this in my life, Mcmanaman is the ****in nuts!

Liverpool have been linked with a 10m bid for Thomas Ince after releasing him a couple of years ago.

Barca also resigned Pique and Fabregas.

Skillful lad no doubt but Wigan could have stayed up of he knew when to pass the ball. Always one touch too many. I'd back him but I think he'd cost us points like he did with wigan.

See, I think from March on he'd started to play at the right time, the right ball, shoot when able.

    Before that, total agreement.

Hmmm I like the look of him but £7m is steep. His best position is right wing as is Johnson.

Tbh I don't see this happening at all. He'll sign for Everton.

he's good, and would give us two cracking wingers (johnson) but no way is he 7million worth. does he have a left peg at all, or is it a bit like johnson's right?

Mclean will hopefully get back to the form of 18 months ago when the season starts, and as for Mcmanaman he is excellent, and would replace sess if he goes (I hope not though).
