Tore Andre Flo - 6.5m and a club record signing at the time. Played all over Europe before and since and did a good job. Played for us and looked total ****e and spelled the end for Reidys reign. He could have been our saviour that season and instead he only added to our misery and we had to write the 6.5m off when we were relegated. So ****e AND expensive. Luckily, the 2nd person brought in on that deadline day, Marcus Stewart, was IMO, a very good player and one I remember with huge affection and admiration and he only cost 1.5m. Another one was Mick Harford. Admitedly, he came to us in his early 30's but as a local hero and Sunderland supporter I expected a swansong to his career. Instead, what we were served up was a bloke who looked a pale and pitiful shadow of the hard man he had been known as. Could have been a glorious end to his career but ended up being a total washout.
Gareth Hall is probably the worst player I have ever seen in a Sunderland shirt (and by God has he had some competition). However, he had a reputation of being crap when he arrived, so it is debatable whether he counts as not living up to potential.
Bellion is the stand out for me. Had all the incredient's to make it, when he signed for Man U I thought he was gonna make it.
I didn't think McCoist was crap for us. He was still quite young when he left us, but in my opinion, was already showing signs that he was going to be a bit special.
Franny Jeffers has to be the best one. When he played U21 football, he was tipped to be the next best thing and England's "goalscoring hero". I'm just glad his illustrious career brought him to Newcastle United*. Not so sure I agree with the person who said Alan Shearer. Fair enough he won nowt with us, but he's still the all time higest scoring footballer in the Premier League. * - Jets
I know Giles from my days living in Nottingham when he was at Derby County. I used to coach his kid brother at the school I used to work in and knew his parents. He is a very talented footballer, but like so many before him, his career has been plagued by injury, hence his fall from grace. I remember back then that there was talk of him going to Spurs, but it never materialised.
I don't know if anyone remembers this, but around the early sixties we had a centre-forward - I think his name was Sharkey. He was touted as 'the next Hughie Gallagher', an unstoppable striker. This kid stank to high heaven so badly, even in his last dark, sad, alcoholic days, the great Hughie would have been ashamed of the association. Any comparison with Gallagher was truly, TRULY laughable. What a tosser!
For me, the biggest flop in Premier League history was none other than Andre Chevchenko. How much did Chelsea pay? Out of the youngsters, it has to be Nicolas Medina, tipped to be the next big thing to come out of Argentina. I remember Peter Reid bigging him up, saying he was a fantastic midfielder who would be as popular as Julio Arca. I think Reidy paid about £3m for him and as far as I know, he never played a league game for us, before being offloaded somewhere else.
