shocking start to the summer so far. we lose the champions league in rather awful fashion (again), two of our most experienced players retire and our best midfielder, hargreaves,is finally forced to admit he is finished here.that was all a bit rubbish, but not terrible. unfortunately,**** just got real. http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/13594839.stm so owen has somehow secured himself a new deal. perhaps having virtually no personality is a trait fergie likes in his last choice strikers, because out of literally nowhere (ie about 10 goals in 2 seasons) he has pipped berbatov to a place in next seasons squad. with welbeck probably returning, this is more than likely the end of berbatov at utd, which in my opinion is hugely disappointing. the leagues top scorer this year despite starting 8 games since christmas, he surely deserves to remain in the team far more than micheal "bench-warmer" owen? unless we're signing an extremely talented new 3rd choice striker who is willing to sit on the bench for half the season,we just shot ourselves in the foot.owen is going to chip in maybe 4 out of berbatovs 15-20 next season.thats a lot of pressure on welbeck to pick up the remaining slack. thanks fergie.just the response required after the barca debacle.
damn ive bean beaten to making an thread on this. oh well copy and paste. This is an interesting twist to our off season. I am pleased for Michael as i do feel he was unfairly underused, but i wonder if this is the final confirmation of what we already knew about Berbatovs departure or perhaps more importantly that it seems unlikely now that we will sign a replacent. Bearing in mind the return of Welbeck and/or Macheda. I think you are wrong in saying that this is a disaster. It will be the same Rooney/ Hernandez partnership. Owen is underated at the moment IMO as deserves a season as third man.
Michael is good to have around on the bench and in the dressing room. He always has a goal in him and hasn't lost his finishing ability. A 1 year deal makes sense and I don't see how it can be a bad move at all.
Owen looked OK when he got a game last season especially towards the end. Welbeck has a good season at sunderland. Didn't score loads, but neither did Rooney last year. The games without rooney will be harder no doubt, but i believe that those two are good enough to see us through it (or Hernandez can bail us out)
Yep totally agree owen is a fantastic player unfortunatly plagued with injuries that have hampered his amazing career. Bet he's glad to finally get a winners medal for the league. (after NEVER getting one in a Liverpool shirt) I think if he can maintain a good run of fitness next season then he WILL score goals. I do believe we will need one more striker to fill the gap berba leaves (if he goes which it looks like he will) not a £50mill piece of **** that couldn't finish his dinner but with the form welbeck has had at sunderland he could be given a chance.
Centre midfield is where the bigger picture at United lies - or as it is at the moment ....not! We need desperately a creative CM a talisman, a guru, a yoda, a rock, please Mr Ferrguson you big funky dude get ya **** together!
I don't think Yoda has the height needed to play centre mid. Tho he does have a remarkably good leap on him...
As a Liverpool fan your more than welcome to him! When he was with us he was only really driven by playing for England and now he's moved on it seems as though he prefers horses more than footy. Agree or disagree with me the worst thing Owen done for his career was leave Liverpool.
What on earth has happened to Berbatov? There must have been some sort of major bust up surely? He's your top goal scorer and yea he's not consistent, but surely he's worth more to you than the 15 mill you'd sell him for?
Disagree. The worst thing he did was not leaving Liverpool, but choosing to join Real Madrid. Right from the start Benitez looked like he didn't want Owen at Liverpool, and willingly let him sit on the bench so he could sell him for as much as possible. But it was a big mistake for such a fragile player to join RM, which has a well deserved reputation for chewing decent players up and spitting them out a season or two later in poor condition. I guess he's not happy with being third choice. Like you say, he's worth more to us than the £15 mill we'd get for him, but I think any move he makes will be all of his own making. After all, we very rarely sell our older players unless they request to leave - once they've made the grade we tend to hold onto them until they have definitely passed their best. Although that said, all the rumours circulating seem to be based on tabloid speculation, and I haven't seen any sort of substance to them thus far.
Tunns He didn't win any with us but thats not what im getting at. He left a club where he played everyweek scored lots of goals, and for what? A PL medal he barely deserves. Fair play Michael though managing to get another contract, just keep topping up those debt levels!
either he said something to fergie or fergie is going senile.those are the only 2 things i can think of berbatov has been content to sit on the bench and come into the team when rooney and hernandez are being rested during the second half of the season.the only reason ferguson should leave berbatov off the bench in the final would be if berbatov mouthed off to him,and i dont see that myself. either way,the amount of trust being put in owen at the moment is disturbing,he doesnt warrant it,hes a poor player that has scored 1 important goal for us and a few others in dead rubbers and early cup ties.
Criticising fergie and calling him senile is a dead giveaway for your thread. No further debate needed!
jog on son.you obviously have never heard the word "debate". fergie is not beyond criticism.far from it.he just gave micheal owen a new contract, thats a shocker of a decision right there.
