Morning all, a rather damp start to the day in this part of the country. Glad I finished off my grass cutting yesterday, but then again it will be growing again already. Need to restock the cave as supplies are getting rather low. I will be looking for some more good quality lucky red wine to help when the season starts. I was on holiday when the play off final took place and was without the bottles that had worked so well during the season. Suppose it was my fault really that we didn't win.
Ak, I would consider it an honour to be called hornet-dave, the Canaries, however, are a short-beak in front due to my location of birth! If I totally switched allegiance, I would be considered a "Glory Hunter!"
Not good news on the dental front. According to the NHS dental list, the nearest ones to me are: Barking, London, Enfield and Cheshunt Now where are did I put my bloody pliers
Morning all Surprise, surprise...it's raining. We're off to see the roses at Mottisfont this afternoon -- the best time of year to see them and it's supposed to be brightening up later. In this part of the world, NHS dentists are about as common as flying elephants. The few that claim to take NHS patients already had a full quota in about 1955 and it would probably be 2055 before another vacancy on the list arose...
Yorkshire, you sound like you know something about photography? I fancy a micro/macro lense to take pictures of plants & flowers, any suggestions please? I have a Nikon digital SLR (£500 job). When I look on the Nikon website there seems to be a lense for everything you can think off and for every pocket and I don't know where to start. Thanks in anticipation.
Apparantly these can be found in the Aberdeen branch of Dobbies. I wasn't sure whether to post it in the Potting Shed or here, but I think it deserves a wider audience. Some of these plants are carniverous! Bolton beware.....
Yorkie, if you're into bird photography, if you ever find yourself in Norfolk, head over to Salthouse and Cley and see the birds there on the marshes. Some really spectacular shots and scenery.
Congratulations on the job, not a real choice is it home or Luton - Brussels could have been interesting though if you are single. The answer to this is purely political. The team was known as the British Isles and then they became known by their nickname "The British Lions", as the jersey had a lion on it. That name stuck, even when the badge changed. About 10 years ago the name was changed to the British and Irish Lions as the politicians in the rugby world thought that naming the team geographically after a bunch of islands (The British Isles) might upset some delicate souls who couldn't understand, so the renaming was done to cover the two political entities of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Republic Of Ireland, even though the rugby team from Ireland represents the whole island of Ireland; and so far no-one has got their rugby shorts in a twist over that one.
Just taken some beautiful close up pics of old English roses at Mottisfont this afternoon. I'm no expert on photography...just use a Canon 550D SLR camera with an 18-55mm lens and use the close-up flower setting on the dial. Probably not very professional but the detail on the flowers and the blurring of the background looks effective to me.
Thanks Theo, yes you can get some really decent pics that way but I want to get on the detail of flowers etc that are perhaps only half inch across.
an 18-55 lens is great and use macro... and/or you might have a tulip/flower setting.. I have just go back... rained all day and soaked through.. but some amazing photos of gannets and razor bills... and the odd puffin........
