I managed to win myself some tickets to the Irish Derby this weekend thanks to a twitter competition so i am making my first ever journey over to Ireland this weekend so i can go to The Curragh for the races! Having never been to Ireland before i was wondering if any of the resident irish amongst us have any tips on places to stay/things to do etc besides the races.

Any recommendations would be very much appreciated!! Cheers guys <cheers>

Not certain what your looking for in terms of accommodation but you should have no problem getting somewhere, it just depends whether you want to stay in one of the cities (Dublin is the closest) or close to the Curragh itself. The National Stud is in Kildare and might be of interest given you like horse racing, here's a site with details:http://irishnationalstud.ie/

With Dublin close by you could visit the Zoo, take a sky walk on our most famous stadium, Croke Park http://www.skylinecrokepark.ie/ , go to the Guinness storehouse as Ste mentioned (yum) , visit Dublin Castle, take a walk around Phoenix Park, visit our Presidents house, Aras an Uacthtarain, visit our National Library, go to Dublin Castle, go to the National Wax Museum, take a swim in the National Aquatic Centre or just go into the pubs and sample the best Guinness in the world and get smashed <whistle>.

Also some of the finest Golf courses in the world close by if your into that. You won't be stuck for stuff to do anyway just look at stuff on Google that interests you and you'll find something to do after or before Racing. Any other questions just ask. Ste or Roto will help ya out more if your destination is to be Dublin because I live down South of there and they'll know the local hot spots more than me.

If you're stopping in Dublin, O'Donoghues (Merrion Row near St Stephens Green) for drinking and live music, Russos (Dame Street) lovely Italian food. Enjoy

Italian food in Ireland, well I never <laugh> the man will need some New season Irish Potatoes with Bacon and Cabbage and a good dollop of butter and plenty of salt, washed down with a Pint of the black stuff and a jemmy!

I am a big fan of Dublin, as already stated a visit to Guinness tower is a must, if only for the view from the top. I would aim to stay on one of the arterial roads or near the tramline for access to the city. Make sure you get a proper Irish breakfast with black and white pudding.

Also take your time, never rush anywhere or you will miss the moments that make the Irish the great people they are.

Great place Dublin, leave some time to go to the Races!!
Someone else has mentioned the Jamieson's distillery, but really enjoyed it
Went on a literary pub crawl (look for adverts) and great fun, especially after about the 5th pint of Guinness (it really does taste different: the only place you could get decent Guinness outside of Ireland used to be Ward's Irish House). Worth condidering
The Cathedrals (Protestant: which is typical Irish) are worth visiting and you can see Dean Swift's place of work
Oh and the people are great
