is he local ? i always thought League of Gentlemen was ahead of its time - even though it was late 90s ?!
I ran past the newsagents that I have been told was the inspiration for the local shop last night. Salisbury Street? Shearsmith used to live above it back in the day. This is what my mate said anyway, he is a bullshitter sometimes.
You are thinking of Jack Kay, it isn't his shop, his was on the corner and has been demolished and new houses built. The little newsagents is still there next to the hairdressers.
Jack Kaye was on the Ella Street/Salisbury Street corner. The shop is on Salisbury St.between Ella St. and Victoria Ave.
Jack was a little white-haired old bloke who wore a proper brown grocers overcoat - just like Arkwwight in Open All Hours. The shop had a little meat counter in the back left corner which he used to man, when you were sent for a pound of ham, with a couple of produce aisles / shelves between it and the till. The old bastard could be stood at the meat counter and still see you knicking sweets at the front of the shop. He had one of those curved mirror things over the door - "I'll tell yer Mam" he used to shout. Never missed a trick old Jack. I even used to buy 10 Embassy Number 1 from the cigarette machine he had on the wall outside on my way to the Queens pub. I feel quite nostalgic now *sniff*
I've heard a lot of the Royston Vasey characters were based on things/people from Hull. Apparently Papa Lazarou the gypsy was inspired by a former landlord of the actors' (actually named Mr. Papalazarou) who used to constantly ask "Is Steve there?" on the phone, referring to Steve Pemberton of course, and even once said "It's a saga now." which is where that strange line came from in the show. The bizarre walk that Papa Lazarou does was, again apparently, inspired by a group of gypsies who, while Reece was doing PE at school, would walk across a field at the back of his school doing that silly walk and it would take the entire PE lesson for them to get across because the daft walk was so slow.
