Not for me either BB...gives me the willies as well. I have been talking with a couple of mates and we have decided to go to see England play the West Indies in early 2015, 3 weeks in the West Indies watching cricket and drinking Stripe sheer heaven The saving has started! That is one on my list....my other big one is when I retire, I am going to the US for a couple of months. Going to visit Macon in Georgia, then some of the Civil War battlefields before heading North West to follow the Oregon trail...just me and a big gas guzzler! Needless to say Mrs W_Y is not happy with either of these plans..but there you go, **** happens!
I have a list of things I have to get Mme to do: Island hopping the Azores Travelling in Morocco Egypt Southern India and Sri Lanka A cruise once in my lifetime Train across Canada Trip across to China and into Tibet The thing is Mme is not getting enough holidays
I desperately want to go back to Norwich, not permanently I don't think! I have not returned since Mum's funeral in April 2003, and that was the first visit since Dad's funeral in April 1995! I desperately want different memories of my beloved Home city than the ones that are there at present!
When I win the lottery I intend becoming a professional sports tourist - a West Indies Test series is top of my list. Not sure about the Stripe though - the local rum would be more to my liking. If you're going to the US, you could always try this: - something else that sets off the tingling in my knees.
So many things I would like to do, and places I would like to go. I would like to walk the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostella in Galicia - beginning on the French side of the Pyrenees. Would also like to go on the trans Siberian railway at some time. But in reality it seems like we're off to Switzerland for three weeks hiking in the mountains of Graubunden. Having said all that my biggest wish is to spend more time in and around Watford. I was born there and my oldest memories are there - I have not lived in England for 23 years and left Watford as a 15 year old in 1971 (not entirely voluntarily). In all I miss England and daily spoken contact with my language (spending my whole life talking German now) and could imagine either moving back at some stage or spending about a year with my wife (German) travelling around the whole country.
Route 66 in a charger or shelby and bermuda to visit grandfathers birth place, both for 2015 to celebrate my half century, thats all so any bonus years spend on the beach..
When I win it as well BB, I will be joining you. But I will be giving that tall icy thing a miss though.... I like the pilgrim walk to Galcia Cologne - rather partial to the dry white wine from that region, I will be a nice treat after that walk. One other thing on my list and also being saved for is to take Mrs W_Y to the Galapagos Islands - she absolutely loves Tortoises and she will love it there with those big old boys!
Like everyone I've got places overseas I'd like to see but my immediate list of things to do is a litle less ambituious. Went to royal Ascot for the first time on Wednesday (it was amazing) and will be doing the Thames Tow path challenge from Putney to Henley (62 miles in 24 hours) in September. Sports wise i've already been to most of what i want to save from overseas Olympics and world cups but I'd like to see a big match in Germany and the Breeders cup horse race meeting in the USA.
Mine is to go and visit all the concentration camps. I have only visited Belsen before. You look at the photos and see the pictures on tv and films, but nothing can prepare you for the horror of seeing the ACTUAL photos. It must be done, for me, to be able to try and understand the full horror of it all. I'd also like to do a tour of the WW1 battlefields. One material thing I would like, and that is to own a Bosendorfer grand piano. Only played one once, and it was fantastic, not my playing, the experience. Mind you if I'd know how much it was worth before I played it, I probably would have been too scared to go near it let alone play it Alas, one thing on my bucket list I fear will never be achieved, and that is seeing Norwich win the EPL. At least the first 3, I stand a chance of doing
As it's happening now, the British Lions tour to Australia. I went to the last 2 (in NZ and SA) so gutted I couldn't really afford it this time around... so hopefully in 12 years. Although maybe responsible by then, with kids etc! I would love to do the Inca Trail, see Mannu Pichu, and to do Route 66. A sky dive. I had one booked when in New Zealand over Lake Taupo. Unfotunately it was cancelled the morning of it due to the weather, and didn't get the chance to re-book as was off to Auckland the next morning. I have absolutely no interest i a bungee jump. If I won the lottery, I'd certainly follow sport around the world. World Cups, rugby world Cups/7s, Ashes/cricket tours, then a few of the America sports to give them a try. Would also like to do some of the big derbies; El Clasico, Boca Juniors/River Plate, Milan derby, Flamengo/Fluminese
Near our cottage in France there is a village called oradour-sur-glane which was destroyed by the SS and all the population massacred.... the village has been kept exactly as it was... and there is now a holocaust museum there. We have been several times... basically taken friends... and never fail to be so moved by it.. http://www.oradour.info/general/introd01.htm
I have been there, a few years ago, and it was a very sombre, moving and, literally, incredible place. I would suggest that every far right-wing adherent or racist should go there to reflect on their beliefs and their inevitable consequences, but unfortunately even this village would probably not alter their warped views. The church with its bullet holes, inside which so many were massacred, is especially poignant. I am glad I do not have to go back there......
Thanks for that yorkie. Have book marked it and will read it in full detail later. It looks a fascinating place to see.
Travelled on the Bernina Express last May and was itching to get out and do some exploring, the weather was crap but it was still very enticing none the less.
Do you think Tripadvisor should be worried by this thread..... Well where do you start... 1 Stop working, ie retire, what as waste of MY time! 2 Be a volunteer for Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2014, had the interview, fingers crossed 3 Go to Galapagos, New Zealand, Grand Canyon - Yosemite et al, Namibia, spend a whole winter skiing around Europe 4 Finish climbing all the Munros - if my body can cope Thats a starter anyway.
Have a skiing holiday - I haven't had one since the University Easter holidays in 1995. This time, I want it to be in New Zealand, just to say I've been snow skiing during our summer. The other one is also to do with skiing, and it's to go to Kitsbuhel to see the downhill race on the Hannenkamm.
I skied down the Hannenkamm when I was there, the Mausefalle is seriously stupid! Agree with a ski trip to NZ. People were skiing on Aonach Mor in Fort William on midsummers day - in Kilts!
I'd like to ski in Bariloche, Argentina, in your summer. I passed through there when i moved to NZ but it was in May, just before the the season started. Barry, why not ski in Australia, if you want a talking point?
Always used to be more expensive - an all-inclusive week at an Australian resort such as Thredbo cost more than a fortnight in NZ, even taking into account the cost of the air fare across the Tasman.
