I saw that. Apparently the Portuguese Police went undercover and staked the pub out for ages. All this for prizes of chocolate and biscuits.

So because we're Brits, we shouldn't respect other countries laws?

They weren't doing anything illegal. No money was changing hands.

Almost everything about gambling is proibited here in Portugal. Even raffles aren't aloud except for charity (But everyone plays and no one cares).

I see, so you're a lawyer now eh? They WERE doing something illegal, they were gambling, as defined in the Portuguese law thingys. The fact it wasn't for cold hard cash is irrelevant.

Anyone going to offer up a "its not their fault they didn't know" as a defence?

Biscuits, pebbles, cash, it does not matter. Gambling is illegal there, they were gambling. They broke the law. We should be saluting Portugal's insistence on not letting visitors take the piss and break laws by pleading ignorance of them.

    Shouldn't we?

I went there a few years ago, I didn't like it so I moved to Villamora (?), which was much much better and I would go there again.

I would respectfully suggest to the Portuguese police, that when your country is financially in the **** and a major source of your income is the tourist industry, then arresting visitors for possession of Hob Nobs is beyond stupid.

Its not the possession of said crunchy sweet baked goods, its what they were doing with them that was illegal.

Still beyond stupid. The officers concerned should be arrested for damaging the countries economy and then be shot at dawn.

Are you telling us that when you go abroad you first research laws which might be different from in England in your destination country even when they are disregarded by the locals?
