Sunderland hardman Lee Cattermole will become the biggest casualty of*Paolo Di Canio’s clear-out*.Cattermole, who captained the club last season, has been told he can go as he no longer fits into Di Canio’s long-term plans. The ruthless Italian wants to shake up the majority of his squad*but does not want to lose keeper Simon Mignolet – a target for *Liverpool – Seb Larsson, John O’Shea, Adam Johnson and Stephane Sessegnon.

Di Canio has already blitzed the dressing room with his no-nonsense regime which includes extra training, fitness work and even orders on diet and behaviour.**Di Canio is determined to improve the quality of the squad – but will have to sell before he can buy and Cattermole, 25, is likely to be the biggest casualty.

The Black Cats boss has also made USA striker Jozy *Altidore one of his targets. The 31-goal AZ Alkmaar star has caught the eye with his record in Holland.Altidore, 23, had an *unremarkable spell at Hull three years ago, but has blossomed and could be handed a second shot at the Premier League with a £5million Sunderland deal.

Can't say I'm that fussed. Decent player with a dreadful tendency to get injured or pick up cards.

Funny how he's about to be sold despite the fact there's no way he'll pass a medical anytime soon. Don't think there's anything in this. If he's to be sold I doubt it's until Jan.

When he's fit and on form i love to watch him, my kind of player, 100% committed. Unfortunately due to many, many injuries and even more red cards, we've not seen that much of Catts have we?

If we can capitalise and get a decent fee for him then i wouldn't lose any sleep if he went, i'd be sorry to see him go, but hes not that good that he's irreplacable so sorry Catts and good luck for the future.

i would be disappointed to see catts go. i think he gives us some steel in the middle of the park and out of all our central midfield players he would be the one i would want to keep.

Wrong thing to do this, if its true. Its okay bringing in new blood and starting a new 'revolution' but what you need is some form of continuity and stability in the team/squad and Catts is to good to get rid. Wrong move IMHO

Step up Mr Bruce and take him under your wing again, I would be sorry to see him go in a way but his playing record is a shambles.

Moving Catts on so quickly is a massive, massive error of judgement imo. All these new faces and foreign lads are going to need time and help to learn about the EPL, the club and the area. Catts is 100% committed and shows leadership and spirit required to drive this club forward.

I wouldn't be so quick to lose lads like Gardner and Catts so eagerly as some and I can see I am not alone in that thinking either. PDC is changing things and I'm all for change but this is too quick and to much of a gamble that all the new faces will click at once.

PDC had better be sure about this as if we get off to a rocky start, he will undermine all his early good work and create a huge problem for himself.

I'd keep the likes of Cattermole and Gardner for next season as they will be needed over the 38 long hard games.

For any other player and club i would agree with your statement, unfortunately we're talking about Cattermole, so where is the continuity? he's not much of a leader if he spends 70% of his season either injured or banned. Sad but true mate. Like i said, i like the bloke but he is a liability as he is now.

I was hoping PDC would get his fitness levels up and instill some discipline into his game, he could be a world beater if he wanted, unfortunately that doesn't seem to be the way forward.

Continuity is within the players we have, we just cant get rid of lots and bring lots in, in fact what we have signed are particularly unproven; Catts isnt. I am aware of his disciplinary record but we still need some stability in the squad and I think it will be naive of the club to start the season without that.

Like you, I would have thought that PDC would have got him into peak fitness and managed him into becoming a better more rounded and more disciplined player. Clearly thats not going to happen.

What I have read about PDC keeping some of the other squad players for instance Johnson, he spent 90% of the season being ****e but the manager sees something in him that he can work with. Perhaps Catts is a step too far or he just doesnt think he is good enough.

If 2 or 3 of the proposed 6 or 7 new faces pay off it will be a good return. All 6 or 7 wont pay off overnight. If and when they don't, who are we going to have left to fill holes or shore things up if we move on canny players like Gards and Catts? Those 2 are not the worst we have ever seen at the club and both are committed and passionate lads who have been around a bit.

I'm all for change but not overnight as that very rarely ever works out. My concerns are growing by the day that PDC is just a little out of his depth at this level. You can change 6 or 7 players in the 3rd or 4th division without hurting too much but no the top flight. This isn't PC Manager here its real life.

Very concerned at this news personally but I accept I'm on my own in these thoughts right now.

Love PDC's passion and desire Farnboro but I am not blinkered about the bloke.

Change is good. Revolution isn't. We were not relegated last term and have a core of canny players that PDC seems hell bent in removing and replacing with untried foreigners I've never heard of.

What if God forbid NONE of them come off straight away?

I am not convinced that PDC has the wherewithal to manage at the very highest level and his early promise is quickly turning into worrying concern for me. This isn't a play thing its our football club he is tearing up here. I only hope he knows how to rebuild it properly too.

He has a poor disciplinary record on and off the field

Does that make him suitable to be one of PDCs players next season, let alone the captain???

This was inevitable from day 1

I think on his day Catts is up there with the best. However you can probably count on your hand the number of times this has happened and he has had more occasions of actually costing us.

That said I would keep him. However and this is the thing if we are bringing in better players him moving on won't matter. If we are bringing in worse players god help us.

I wouldn't believe every story out there we are being linked with everything and selling everyone apparently.
