He's got experience at the highest level, a great record, and 5+ years left in him. He doesn't cause controversy, and is the kind of big name that makes players want to go there. He's exactly what Arsenal need.

I thought they might have bought Benzema last summer for the same reasons, as we know Wenger is a fan. I'd be stoked if Higuain came in.

I hope i didn't come across like I was criticising... I am just surprised at the amount as you've never gone above £16m before on Arshavin (like us with Bentley) and it looks like you'll lose all of that 16m as he is going on a free (according to the press) like us with Bentley.

I have no idea about whether or not he's good value as I rarely watch football from other leagues and don't really pay attention to individuals when I get to watch CL football but i am old enough to remember the fuss over the first £1m transfer in 1979 (trevor fancis) and it makes me laugh that £16 - £20m isn't considered an eye watering amount of money in football any more <yikes>

I just think Wenger knows that he needs to spend big in order to take us to that next level, and us paying this sort of transfer fee has been coming for a long time, what with all the new sponsorship deals, as well us having plenty of cash saved up.

Spurs do sell their best players, the difference between them and us is they sell on their terms. We have been mugged off recently with RVP, Nasri and Clichy because of their contracts and Cesc because he was being a twat. If Bale goes I expect Spurs to get upwards of £60M for him which would be almost as ridiculous as the £80M+ they got from selling Berbatov, Modric and Carrick.

Re Higuain, £22M is a lot of money but if you want to compete then you have to pay market prices. If he shows the form he did pre injury then he will be an absolute bargain.

When Cym first started watching football, transfer fees were calculated on an Abacus and currency was in shiny beads and flint arrow heads <whistle>

Back in the days where a top striker would cost you a Wooly Mammoth Pelt or two . . .

Was that before they knew how to make fire and the primary form of entertainment consisted of writing on cave walls?

22 million for Higuain is a fair deal. This is a striker who has scored more than 100 goals for Real Madrid, one of the biggest clubs in world football, and he's only now entering the peak of his career. He's scored 19 goals for Madrid this season, 26 the previously, 13 in the 2011 season (limited appearances due to injury), 29 goals in 2010, and 24 goals in 2009.

So this guy is a proven goal scorer at one of the biggest clubs in the world, so the price is fair, he sure as hell isn't worth only 15 million which is the highest we usually pay for a player, and is a definite 20-25 million candidate.
