Dutch football magazine Voetbal International wrote earlier today on their website that Celtic have bidded twice for FC Groningen central defender Virgil van Dijk. Van Dijk is a hot prospect in the Eredivisie and is rumoured to go to PSV or Ajax this summer. VI now announces that Celtic is now in the race for the 21 year old defender. General Director of FC Groningen did confirm that negotiations are undergoing with a foreign club but did not say that this club was Celtic. The bid that was made by the foreign club was insufficient according to Nijland. FC Groningen has set a 4 million euro price tag on Van Dijk, who has a contract at Groningen till 2015. Brighton and Hove Albion were close to sealing a deal in the winter transfer period but a contract was never signed. Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf reports that the deal is done: Virgil van Dijk has signed a contract for Celtic. Van Dijk passed his medical on Tuesday and will be presented to the fans on Friday. The transfer fee is around the 2.5 million euros, 2.3 million pounds. The 21 year old defender says that he is delighted to wear the green and white jersey: "It's great to be here in Scotland, this is such a big club and the passion of the fans is immense. I remember the Champions League game against Barcelona, it was epic and I was glued to the telly the entire game. The ambiance during that game is unforgettable!"
