    here's the issue

"I've played against him numerous times and he is a fantastic player," Fowler, who scored 183 goals during two spells with the club, told Liverpoolfc.com.

roobie you're ancient and toure has abig question makr over desire and ability to deliver at his age. If he's got the pace it's fine but if his legs are gone... oh boy!

Liverpool have a fight on their hands if they are to win the race to sign Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The attacking midfielder from Shakhtar Donetsk is a target for manager Brendan Rodgers but the Reds face a battle to secure his services.

Mkhitaryan will cost Liverpool around £20m but their biggest challenge will be in seeing off the interest from a host of top European clubs said to be preparing bids for him.

The Armenian has attracted the attention of a number of sides after his performances in this season’s Champions League for Donetsk. Mkhitaryan scored 25 goals in the Ukrainan league in the last campaign and is seen as the ideal player to help add the extra ‘20 goals’ that Rodgers believes will push them towards Champions League qualification.

The lack of European football at Anfield next summer could be another stumbling block in Liverpool’s pursuit of the talented 24-year-old.

Earlier in the campaign, Mkhitaryan was said to have caught the attention of Barcelona, Chelsea and Manchester City although it remains unclear if they are keen.

But Liverpool’s interest is real and should they manage to bring the Donetsk star to Merseyside then it will be seen as statement of intent as well as a reminder as to the pulling power of the club.

A three-time Armenian player of the year, Mkhitaryan said it was his wish to play for “one of the strongest clubs in the world” earlier this season.

That rules us out (in our present guise...) unless he's talking from a historical perspective?

its unusual for the echo to write stuff like this.... it could be hedging thier bets.

It seems t me the link to the guy has grown to a point where a real interest is confirmed, but not really a bid. If any other clubs step in they could well rob him off us and i said as much this morning on here some place.... the thing is do you wait for a bid from one of these CL clubs or do you take the offer at hand? All I can say is this story sounds very tabloidy in construct so they could be hedging against this not actually happening... the echo don't get into this type of stuff often

Would be good for the future, not his direct replacement though.

Looking at who Madrid COULD offer you'd much rather take one of Callejon, Alonso, Arbeloa or maybe even Coentrao.

But such a rumour is probably absolute rubbish. Swaps + cash are very rare, really, and any Madrid player will want to wait for the new manager to bed in before deciding to look elsewhere.

Brace yourself for this one lads.

Mircea Lucescu (Shaktar's Manager) has done an interview with Romanian newspaper ProSport and he said something about Mkhitaryan among others.

Mircea Lucescu: "Now I have to think about Mkhitaryan, because it's possible he will leave too. There is a club that is paying his buy-out clause and there is nothing we can do, we need to find someone else"

Looks like Dortmund are close to signing Eriksen too. Really hope it's us that have triggered the release clause. What a sign of intent Mkhitaryan would be <yikes> And that only covers the Carroll money really! If we do reinvest the money we get for Suarez, it'll be very interesting to see how our squad lines up next season.
