We're midway through June, and we've already agreed to sign 2 (looking highly like of 3, with Mignolet seeming to be edging closer) players in principal.

And for me they're all very good signings, who will improve us straight away. It's clear a few people don't seem to rate Aspas for whatever reason, but for me he's the sort of player we need in that area. A player who's first intention is to turn and create something positive, and takes risks. I give Downing a lot of stick, but that is mainly due to his mind set. He'll get the ball and take the easy option every time. I actually think Downing is a good player, and he does have ability.. But if you don't have the right mindset then you will never reach your full potential nor deliver week in, week out. I really like the look of him, admittedly only seen him a few times, but he's a clever player, and it's not often you say that about "work horses", he drifts in to space and pulls defenders out of place, a bit like Borini really but with much better ball control.

Toure was a no brainer, their's arguments about his wage and what not but when you focus on him just as a player he's still a good player on his day and he brings to the team what we're losing (to some extent) in Carragher retiring. Experience in abundance, trained with some of the top strikers to grace the EPL; Bergkamp, Henry, RVP, Aguero, Tevez and more. He fits in to what we're trying to implement in our defence, calmness on the ball and awareness of what's around you (the latter goes without saying for any defender, mind). It's shrewd piece of business, and this isn't the first time we've taken advantage of some of the players who are rotting at City.

Add that to the fact we have Sturridge and Coutinho for a full season now and it seems to be taking place. Yeah Suarez is most probably off, but we have proved we can perform without him, and with the money we get comes an entirely new opportunity, a chance to maybe replace Suarez with 1-2 top quality players, who will benefit the team and only influence it in a positive manner. For the first time in a few seasons I trust our scouts.

I'm hoping over the transfer window we do offload with some of the "dead wood" and we actually start to rebuild a solid team.

Yea I agree with op. for once we seem to be making signings we need to improve specific areas with a plan in mind. Our bench is still weak though but Rome wasn't built in a day etc and this is why I maintain we need to give BR 3/4 seasons.

The other thing to remember is no manager or scout can get it right all of the time. 70% strike rate would be superb.

  7. Superb indeed. Most managers are lucky to get 50% which is statistically very good!

Mkhitaryan is the player really exciting me atm, I hope we land him if Suarez leaves. Not a direct replacement, but my god that guy has talent and, more importantly, is very unselfish. If anyone gets bored, have a look at his assists and goals on youtube (blah blah blah) and just look at the movement he makes from midfield to create/open up space and then knock it across to set someone up for an open goal, despite having an ok chance himself. His goals are wonderful too. Him and Coutinho behind Sturridge would create loads of chances.

I think Aspas will be ok. Alot are discounting him because he's not really known, but if he can score consistantly in a poor team like Celta by being in the right place, he'll score here with better players behind him.

If we've lost Suarez and bought in Aspas, Mkhitaryan and one other forward player using that money, I'd be very happy.

    That said,
    -----------Sturridge---------
    Coutinho--Mkhitaryan--Suarez

    ...would be amazing.

I like where Brenda is taking the team on paper

Agree with this. Losing Suarez this season wouldn't be as big of a blow as it would of been last season for sure. With him leaving, as it stands we have Sturridge, Borini and Aspas (You could count Carroll in there). If you use the money well you could still have a competitive forward line. That's only IF the Carroll and Suarez money are invested wisely. Mkhitaryan would be fantastic, he was superb against Chelsea last season and he'll add even more depth to midfield/upfront, competition will only help Coutinho too, no player can be a guaranteed starter.

You'd like to think Sturridge would get 20+ in the league this year based on his performances so far and if Suarez goes he'd be the main man in the middle. You'd then hope Borini/Aspas can chick in with 15-20 between them and then another 15 or so between Gerrard/Coutinho/Henderson

If we got Mkhitaryan (or Henri Ryan) then with his goal record last year suggests he'd easily get 10+. you can then either add Suarez's ontop or suggest his direcy replacement will get 10-15 a season who ever they may be.

I'd still like us to get another 1 or 2 defenders depending on who leaves tho, and for one of those to be established and ready to be first choice CB when the season starts.

  12. Sturridge won't play anything near thirty-eight league games. We need another forward or Borini to come good, preferably both!

Have faith in Borini! I feel a name change coming if we end up selling Spearo...might be taking inspiration from Fab

Thought that about Agger & Gerrard...

I do agree that if Suarez and Carroll both go then we'd need another striker. I guess Henri Ryan is a replacement for Carroll, not in terms of position & type of player, but in terms of thats where the money would go. We then either have Suarez or we use £40mil+ and spend £20mil on another forward to compete/play with Sturridge and the rest on some defenders/another DM.

I expect Henrikh to come in whether Suarez leaves or not. If Suarez does leave, we then need to bring in another attacker.

Aspas is an upgrade on Downing IMO so that's a positive, while Toure will provide good experience (in the dressing room) and help tutor some of the youngsters.

If we can bring in Henrikh and Papa (and another player if Suarez leaves), then I'll be happy because we will improve the spine/core of the team. These are players who can jump straight into the first team which is what we need.

here's how to kill the vibe.

we just hired a guy who's well past it and gave him his last big pay day in toure.... well done brendan on this one... alienate one CB, lose another to retirement and just hire in a guy who's way past it..

we just bought a guy (apparently) who's team got relegated and who headbutted a player to get sent off. who's goal record aint great but apparently was his sides main goal creator... but the side got RELEGATED. oh great... another pennent.

We are linked with a keeper who can't distribute the thing... oh great we lose our one wolrd class player left once suarez goes... brill

we are linked to a player with an unpronouncable name who can't speak a world of english no doubt and who will sign for someone else and we'll hear "interest cooled" from us.

I hope this has dampened your moods nicely ;) I do try to please.

Our business so far looks OK. but we need more. so far: Aspas (first 11 quality?), Mig (replacement), Toure (not first 11 quality). Would like us to sign Mkhitaryan or Eriksen to really signal intent. But we need a few more players, and that's not even assuming Suarez leaves
