I doubt its as close as speculated, he's on holiday still? He still has 2 years to go with his contract and Liverpool have nothing more to offer him than we do and with new management and a new squad the possibility that we'll do just as well as liverpool next season is not totally out of the question. However if any of the top 5 wanted him i think he'd be away like a shot. Just don't think moving to Liverpool would satisfy his ambition of being Belgium's no 1 any more than staying at SAFC would.

Without the Suarez the Teeth, your lot would be bottom half strugglers as well. He scored a third of you goals and you simply wouldn't be any better than us if he left. Sorry, WHEN he leaves.

We conceded only 11 more goals (6 of them in one game) but our problem was scoring (we lost our top man Fletcher for the final 10 games) so without your best striker you will be as ****ed as we were leat term. Suarez is also the joint 2nd with assists?

Liverpool, because of historic achievements, are certainly bigger (not that much in attendances mind) but only just these days. We have about the same chance as winning the league next season as Liverpool (namely not a ****ing hope in hells) and Liverpool have a very slim chance of top 5, with The 2 Manchester clubs, Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs all vastly superior in stature and team ability. The best Liverpool can hope for is top 6 or 8 at best. We may well (especially if we add the couple of strikers to Fletcher) finish far better than this term and be on your coat tails anyway.

Liverpool are a great club but these days the fans are bitter scousers who can only look towards Manchester and stew in their bile and envy. That shows at times and its why most fans would be chuffed to see you struggle and be relegated, if only to shut you all up about what a great club you are. You're simply not that great 70's and 80's club anymore and to be brutally frank, haven't been for 20 years. No one fears you and everyone see's you as a chance for points now.

If Simon wants to leave to better himself then I can understand that but if he does go, I would expect it to be a far bigger and better option than Liverpool tbh. If it were Arsenal for instance, or a foreign outfit in the Champions League then it would be a huge step up. At Liverpool, it would only be a mini step up and if Suarez goes a step backwards.

Get your facts right before you start spouting ****e, without SUarez's goals we would have still finished 7th. BBC and opta pointed that out a few weeks ago.

Not even the best club in Liverpool, cest. Probably been mentioned in a thread as long as this, but worth reiterating. I agree Arsenal are a much better bet for him.

Good keeper but so is Westwood, for once we have a player we could afford to sell. But Short is smart, we will get maximum money for him like with did with Bent and Henderson. I expect the final figure will be closer to 15m

    oh dear

Liverpool target Simon Mignolet deserves Sunderland’s thanks, says legend Jimmy Montgomery

JIMMY Montgomery says if Simon Mignolet leaves Sunderland, the Belgian can go with a clean conscience knowing he did his bit for the Black Cats.

The Belgian is the subject of an aggressive bid from Liverpool, who are determined to land the 24-year-old this week, and seem certain to get their man.

Reds managing director Ian Ayre cancelled a business trip to Brazil at the weekend in the belief that the deal can be finalised this week.

But while Montgomery would love to see Mignolet stay at the Stadium of Light, he says Sunderland fans cannot reproach the young stopper if he moves.

“I don’t want Simon to go,” the club’s leading appearance maker told the Gazette. “I think he’s a tremendous talent, who is only going to get better, and I’d love to see him playing for Sunderland for many years to come.

“But if he does go, I hope Sunderland fans will say ‘good luck to the lad’ because I don’t think anyone could have done more to keep Sunderland up last season than he did.

“Supporters voted him Player of the Season by a distance, and I’d agree with them.

“Goalkeepers can’t get you three points – not unless they score a penalty or go up for a late corner I suppose – but what they can do is earn you a point by keeping a clean sheet.

“And few keepers kept more clean sheets in the Premier League last season than Simon.

“It’s a team game of course, but there’s many a game Sunderland would have lost had he not made one or two truly outstanding saves.

“In my view he saved us plenty of points over the course of the season, and that was probably the main reason we stayed up.

“If he does go, then he leaves a legacy of Sunderland still being in the Premier League, and for that, he deserves our gratitude.”

Liverpool have kept on coming back to Sunderland after an initial offer of £6.5m, gradually raising their offer to £8m and now £9m with Sunderland holding out for £10m and they look set to get it, one way or another, although much will depend on how the deal is structured.

And club legend Monty says it is the way of the world for players to move on in the modern era.

Monty, who was on Sunderland’s books from 1958-77, said: “In my day it wasn’t that uncommon for players to spend almost their whole careers at the one club.

“But times have changed and it is sad but unrealistic that players regularly move on these days.

“The best chance you have to hold on to players is to be successful and I think that’s the challenge facing Sunderland now.

“Paolo Di Canio is looking to build a new team and good luck to him on that.

“Simon Mignolet kept the old one up and if he does move on, then maybe his transfer fee will help support the create of a new and more successful side than the one which finished fourth bottom last season.”

I ****ing detest Liverpool. I don't mind him going but would rather it to a decent side. I also don't think Liverpool is much of a step up. As has been said they are a step above us hut not a CL outfit and can't see them being a CL outfit for quite some time. If he asks to go there then I question his ambition.
