Note to the OP - the Western Allies is the 1930's were officially neutral in the Spanish Civil War and certainly did not side with the Nationalists. This entire mess is due in some part to the artificial construction of countries following the dismemberment of the old Ottoman Empire after World War 1. It is also due to extremely conservative societies and a certain level of religious hostility between the branches of Islam - that particular emnity goes way back to the inheritence of the Prophet, the Shia believed that his son Ali should have been the next Caliph, not Abu Bakr, who is accepted by the Sunni. Further, Ali's line was to have continued as Caliph, but were ousted by Muawiyah, a popular military leader in Syria, and Ali was assassinated. Ali's son Husayn was also killed. This led to the formal breach between the two groups.
