This is the Daddy of all motorsport events; the BIG ONE and is now officially 90 years old! The parade lap will see the opening drivers crossing the Start line to get underway at 3pm, local time, on Saturday 22nd June, finishing 24 hours later on Sunday, 23rd. Anyone else going this year? If you're not fortunate enough to experience the event up close and personal, for-real, you might care to check out the details of this year's extensive internet TV coverage, which begins this Sunday (16th). http://www.24h-lemans.com/ Anyone who enjoys F1 should also attend Le Mans 24hr at least once in their lives! For this reason, I have taken the liberty of posting this in the F1 section as well as under its proper place, since the 'Other Motorsports' section seems to go largely unnoticed. So, unless the moderating team are unhappy with the idea, by all means discuss it here too (or instead(!)).
Hahaha… I know… I'm frequently 'over the pond', and have many friends and associates there. Of course, I was only referring to myopic types, which can exist in any community or nationality, including the UK. My apologies to you, Bhaji, should include this genuine acknowledgement that I consider you far less than myopic – as is very clear from your contributions. Well apparently the uni that I want to go to (Oxford Brookes) do a trip to the Le Mans, I never really watch it as my streams suck and tv coverage isnt that great (and i dont get the channels anyway) but it would be great to go one day..
Yeah. That would be great. I can't imagine how plastered you could get by the end of that race. I hope they give you another 24 hours to sleep before kicking everybody out.

I would love to go to the Le mans 24hr + Nurburgring 24hr in the same year. The europeans know how to treat F1 events, sadly something which is lost at the British GP nowadays.

Although I feel a personal regret at your reference to what happens at Silverstone, I'd add that the 'Europeans' (as opposed to 'Brits') know how to treat all sorts of events relative to what is deigned acceptable to the British establishment; which very much includes such 'anti-establishment' activities as motor racing…
I can only speak for myself, Bhaji; but I'll make an effort to interpret what CaptainF1 was getting at: I regret the fact that someone on this forum (CaptainF1) has expressed an apparently dim view of what happens at Silverstone. I acknowledge what I think was his comparison of 'Establishment' views from 'continental Europe' as opposed to 'Britain', in respect of popular, public interest â which very much includes events such as motor racing.
I'm trying my best! What I'm referring to is a bit political. I'm hinting at the way things are done in Britain – in my view, due to a predominating 'Establishment' – which, when compared to most forward thinking European countries, seems less accommodating of popular opinion. To put it bluntly, the establishment view in Britain seems rather conservative (little 'c') when compared to the rest of Europe*. I guess that ultimately, this harks back to the failure of Oliver Cromwell and his attempt at revolution! *The only way to put it more bluntly would be to say that Britain is anally retentive! (And this grey is a pure mixture of black and white!)
Nope... I'm still not getting it. Are we saying that the British fans are somehow lesser than those on the continent? Now I haven't been to a race on British soil in over a decade, but I always found the British fan to be among the most passionate and knowledgeable.
No, it is nothing to do with the fans (the 'people') themselves! So far as I'm aware, the British 'fan' is as good as any. What I'm getting at is more a case of what they are 'allowed' (or not allowed) to do, by what I see as a rather domineering establishment in the UK; something which is far less apparent, to me at least, in continental Europe, as well as the USA, Canada, Brazil, Australia, Japan, or elsewhere. I hasten to add that my response was to CapF1, and that my response to you incorporated what I thought he was getting at. In my view, the British fan tends to get a rough deal because elsewhere, I think they are better accommodated. That said, I've heard of unfortunate incidents elsewhere, which may also suggest over-zealousness by relative minors given temporary power in those countries too. But my perception is that it happens more often in the UK. I don't feel I can explain myself further without side-lining the thread, since it is essentially a philosophical point about politics. ________________________ More to the point, have you attended a 24 hr race? If ever you do, be sure to try to do the whole 24 hours yourself by not sleeping! It gives a real sense of what it takes to participate…
